There was a very entertaining article in the Post a while back about people showing up and the wrong airport. They interviewed cab drivers, who made it clear is VERY common, and successfully getting the person to the correct airport is a great way to make a good tip! |
John Foster Dulles was Secretary of State. He was not even close to being president of the United States, what are you talking about. |
Same, native and have never encountered anyone who can't pronounce it. |
Ever since learning of this Carol Burnett bit it's what I think of when I hear 'Dulles"

| I hate that it’s named for Dulles. It was going to be named for George Marshall which would be cool since it has the majority of flights from Europe but Dulles died like the week before. |
Sssshhhhhh. Don’t confuse them with facts. |
DCA isn't in DC either really. The Pentagon isn't in DC either. Americans really aren't strong on geography, foreign and domestic. |
| Why didn't they build Dulles closer to DC or in Montgomery county |
I'm guessing because of the available land and air traffic. |
So that the locals wouldn't complain about plane noise. So they built houses around Dulles so that people would be able to complain. |
This is you pointing out “the Pentagon and National aren’t really in DC you geographic ignoramus” 🙄 |
Double bridge glasses are out of style. |
|
OMG why we would we call it Washington DC International? You don't think it would be confusing to have 3 local airports called, National, Washington DC, and Baltimore Washington? That's a hellish level of confusion.
But fine. If we have to rename it, let's call it the Marion Barry Worldwide Speedway. |
Would have been confusing since BWI is now named for a different Marshall. |
I hope not because Allen Dulles was instrumental in allowing many Nazi scientists and such to find refuge in the US after WWII. The US government recruited them to help in the fight against communism and protected them from any justice related to their war crimes. |
