It depends on the friend and his parents. I would do it in a heartbeat for his childhood friend whom I already consider as my own child. Not for anyone else.

My parents did this when I was a kid for my brother's friend. The arrangement worked out fine. He stayed for about 4 months and then left when high school ended to live with his parents in Florida. It was really no big deal.
