Anyone else too poor for instagram?

Some of the most profitable people I’ve worked with were ugly, never showed pics of their lifestyle, and had terrible quality pics/videos. Meanwhile there are accounts with 1 million+ followers who can’t even pull in $25k a year.

You optimize the machine for the individual, not the individual for the machine.

How do the profitable people do it? What are they doing? Just curious. Signed Gen Xer who doesn’t get it.

I'm on there just to see pics of my friends' kids. And we all post primarily through stories, so they disappear after a day. I post an actual post maybe once a month at most. But I post stories several times a week. My account is private, as are most of my friends' accounts.

I don't follow anyone who posts sexy vacation photos, lol.

The influencers make themselves into advertisers. It turns the usual marketing program around where instead of a business hiring someone and filming an ad, an influencer creates a following then companies pay them to pitch. It’s a hard job to be an influencer.

Thanks for explaining. When I watch how my kids consume media - via tiktok, YouTube, and Shapchat - it makes me think all of entertainment, advertising, and marketing will be completely different for GenZ. It makes no sense to make “commercials” or print “ads” for them because they don’t watch Tv not read print media. It’ll be an interesting change!

This.

I have a private account with just immediate/extended family and a handful of very close friends (lifelong).

Nobody thinks anyone is bragging. I get to see my cousins’ families, aunts/uncles, etc.

I get a million requests from acquaintances to follow me, I just ignore because it is just for family and those that truly love me.

This. I've been posting more during the pandemic because all of my kids' older relatives are quarantined and bored out their minds. They love seeing kid pictures, even if they're mundane. My goal in posting is to support their quarantine so they stay home and safe.

Grown women who show off on IG are socially stunted and warped in the head, OP. Be glad you have a a life- enough so that you are not glued to your phone.

This. Some of us just genuinely don't have your attention-seeking, competitive worldview, OP.

Instagram gives "prehistoric era" a new connotation.

ha! just today I was thinking how much I enjoy it and how relaxing it is. I follow national parks pages, travel pages, friends, and some pages that post inspiring quotes or pictures. I post mostly pictures with the kids, or occasional workout pictures, or pictures of something interesting from a walk or bike ride etc.

Same. I don't post but follow nature sites, artists, puppies. It's my respite from stress.

I used to live in a 200 square foot apartment. I see lots of folks posting about tiny places.

It seems all you really need is pretty legs, some high heels end sheer nylons and you can get yourself a few thousand followers overnight. Do a hashtag search for nylons, tights or pantyhose and see what I mean.

I follow people that do Target and Walmart Tryons... so no.

I'm a woman in my 40s and I post on IG often as I travel, hike and live in an amazingly beautiful place. I'm also a pretty good photographer. I love the feedback I get and feel like people truly enjoy seeing the landscapes and adventures I post. I dont often post photos of myself and its definitely not to show off, but to share.
