Voters are waiting in line for hours in Georgia

Anonymous
With the advent of early voting and vote by mail, Election Day should really be moved to a Sunday. That would give a large number of folks who work 6 days a week or do shift work the chance to vote in person. They would not worry about picking up kids from school or use a lunch break etc. This would also allow large numbers of church goers access to car pooling to the polls and it would increase the number of volunteers who could provide assistance, chairs, water etc to those who need it while they wait.

Oh, it’s this. All night and all day. I do not live in a state with long lines (and already voted absentee), but I hoped to be just one of millions upon millions of tiny cuts.

“If your vote didn’t matter, they wouldn’t fight so hard to block it.” https://www.splcenter.org/news/2019/10/26/weekend-read-if-your-vote-didnt-matter-they-wouldnt-fight-so-hard-block-it

So true! I just dropped off my ballot at my neighborhood rec center. There were 4 other people who dropped their ballots off while I was in the area (3 minutes). Nothing will deter people from voting. Voting is easy and safe in my town. I admire the Georgia voters standing in line, making damn sure their vote is counted.

A vote today counts the same as a vote on October 28 or November 3. But if people prefer to wait in line, then that is their choice.

I don't think you get it, and that is your privilege.

These precincts ALWAYS have lines because they have 2 or 3 voting machines for 100,000+ people. Waiting until election day means not getting to vote at all. It is great that YOU happen to have a precinct where you can vote, that is accessible and minimal lines. That isn't what it looks like in minority precincts in majority GOP states and counties.

You are incorrect. All the news reports I have seen state that the delays today are due to high turnout.

Even more reason to do it early.

Nope. One place has 6 machines, some of which are "glitching".

Um, there are 22 more days until the election (and 16 more days with the polls open). I don't know why so many people are trying to vote on the first day the polls open.

Um, maybe because Indigenous People's Day (or Columbus Day as they still call it in GA) is a state/fed holiday there. Maybe these folks are taking advantage of the one day where they won't miss work or have to burn leave to vote.

They are actually voting on a day when they *can* vote. And if the GOP is trying to suppress votes anyhow, there will be long lines due to both today.

Most of those voters look like people of color. What's it like in the UMC white neighborhoods? Dozens of voting machines? No lines?

Georgia GOP is total, complete, utter, despicable, racist scum determined to hold onto power by cheating!!!!

Yes, way to go. Big respect to these folks.

What would that do? Every other country knows we're a shithole.

We need unbiased, expert recommendations on how to ensure our elections are free and fair. Most Americans don't think that they are, and that in and of itself is a threat to democracy.

Yeah Brian Kemp and Mitch McConnell really give a F about recommendations from other countries.

Voter suppression is the plan.

The GOP represents a minority of US voters.
The ONLY way the GOP can win is to suppress the vote of people of color and other Democrat-leaning voters.
Not a whole lot of POC vote for the GOP.
The GOP must cheat in order to win.

My best friend lives in Georgia. I sent in funds and her son reported one of the long lines, so maybe they lined up? I bet the site is getting a lot of help.

As a side note, especially for people who do not think that pizza is healthy and so they can't support it -- there is another site doing restaurant quality food. Feed the Polls is a partnership between The Infatuation, Zagat, and The Migrant Kitchen. Site at https://www.feedthepolls.org/ .

These people may change the election, so thank God they are willing to sacrifice hours of their time to do so.

That's awesome.

Why don't Rs do something like this to encourage voting? All they know how to do is discourage voting.

So, lines to vote 3 WEEKS ahead of election day is now voter suppression?

You people are ridiculous.

We’re reality based. You can’t say the same.

People are lining up for hours weeks ahead of election day because they know their state is trying to take away their vote. What you are seeing is the mix of actual voter suppression - limited polling stations; few working machines - with the reaction to that suppression.

That's why people are lining up for hours this far ahead of an election. Because they know that the GOP is doing what it can to take away their vote, and they are saying NO.

Exactly. Why are there lines for something that should take no more than 10-15 minutes? Think real hard.
