DCPS survey

What was the header/intro text for the options? Seems like you only choose an option IF you need some kind of accommodation or schedule flexibility. All others will be assigned according to DCPS need.

The request for a virtual position if you’re not eligible is given in a first come first serve based on the survey return time stamp. If the survey stands the union is screwing with teachers that want virtual but hold off filling it out at their request.

Doesn’t “part-time” mean PT in-person and PT distance? Ie, hybrid?

"Option 1: I would like to be considered for the 100% virtual assignment option because I meet at least one of the conditions below and I can fulfill my role remotely.
- I am among the vulnerable population for COVID-19, as described by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines, due to my age.
- I qualify for an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) due to a health condition that puts me at risk or potentially at risk for COVID-19 per CDC guidelines. Please click here to initiate an ADA application and contact the LMER team at dcps.lmer@k12.dc.gov with questions.
- I have a household member who is at risk or potentially at risk for COVID-19 as defined by the CDC guidelines.
- I have school aged dependent(s) who are receiving virtual instruction or I am otherwise in need of childcare due to closures related to the public health emergency.

Option 2: I would like to be considered for the 100% virtual assignment option because I meet at least one of the conditions below and I can fulfill my role remotely.
- I am unable to report to in-person work due to public transportation being unavailable.
- I am the sole caretaker for other dependent(s) and services for the dependent(s) are unavailable during the workday.

Option 3: I do not qualify for a 100% virtual assignment but would like to be considered for such an assignment on a first come, first served basis. Please note: Employees' status will be determined based on the time-stamp of the submitted survey.

Option 4: I do not qualify for a 100% virtual assignment but am interested in returning to in-person work for fewer than five days of in-person service (i.e. not full time). Note: this option is only applicable if DCPS shifts to a model which can accommodate this scheduling preference:"

What if I choose #4 and my class doesn’t have enough kids who want to go back? I teach self contained.

I DO NOT Want to be placed at another school or get kids from across town, been there and it’s awful when the bus messes up every week.

Oh....I didn’t get around to the survey. I wanted to teach in person but I’m an option 2, public transportation isn’t available? I take the metro and bus to get to my school everyday.

I haven’t been on since March, I walk to the grocery. So what unless I want to shell out $40 for Uber everyday I can’t teach in person?

Or if I want to wait 40 min for the red line then 40 for the bus? This makes me so disheartened

This is crazy. The metro is running but the bus line(s) I take are not. They can run the buses at full capacity come November?

A very important point. DC has to determine how many kids they can bring back and can only do so with information on the number of teachers who will be available. Withholding information on whether you have a condition or other reason to not return in person hurts everyone -- the families who can't get timely notification, the students who are waiting to see if they can be accommodated in person, other teachers who want to know the plan. I don't understand the strategy here unless the goal is to just "stick it" to DC. If that's it, playing these games doesn't only hurt government and DCPS, it hurts families.

I didn’t hold off mine, I stand with the union but I can’t afford to pay for non public transportation 4 days a week. If there’s reimbursement I’ll gladly teach in person. Or hey they can run buses just for teachers...

This is not true. Nothing is first come first served. It is if you have a documented reason and or qualify for leave you get it.

Yes, the union is awful- but not because of your reasoning.

NP and another DCPS teacher here. I definitely understood this survey to be only for people who are requesting anything other than a full-time return to in-person teaching. OP, I don’t think you need to fill it out. I don’t think DCPS is trying to screw with us. They just need to know how many teachers they have available. This seems totally reasonable to me.

DC should run buses or other transport for teachers. In other areas, they are asking people to get off of buses if there are school children who need to get on. We could do that here for teachers and students or find other ways to support transportation for schools. Thank you for being part of the solution for getting kids back to school.

OP- I just don’t know why Dcps would design a “required” survey that you don’t want some teachers to fill out. How do you then know who has seen it? It’d be far better to have an option of in person so they’d have a true percentage/idea of the data. Plus I’ve been teaching 17 years, and I don’t trust downtown to be up front about anything.

The survey I saw said that it was not required. DCPS teachers are expected to return to work in November. The only ones who won't are those with approved leave or an accommodation. The survey is only to gauge the number who need accommodations. Sooner or later, we have to go back to work in person, get approval to not go back in person, or move on to other work/employment.

The request for 100% virtual WITHOUT a qualifying reason is what is first come first served.

Why do you think they don't want everyone to fill it out? They want to know if you are willing and able to teach in person when they return (which will likely be hybrid), or not. 100 percent in person is not an option right now, so why ask?

This was my impression. It left a lot of options (none of which actually covered my odd situation of using two different forms of leave starting 11/9), but I planned to fill it out after asking DCPS how to respond based on my situation. I was actually surprised to see the Union come out against it, though their explanation that it was sent out before they received a promised response seems fair too. I’m guess it was rushed out after the Council requested a plan and they announced some early re-openings.

I think DCPS will put out a decent plan to reopen, but will be hindered by staff taking leave. I’m very curious how they will end up handling even a small percentage of teachers being out. You only need 10-20% out to cause chaos in staffing. At my school that would only be 6-12 teachers.

Exactly If you just count classroom teachers (not specials, sped, ell) we only need between 3-6 teachers to take leave to cause chaos at my school.
