He’s a juvenile whose vandalism crime is a misdemeanor. There’s a reason our criminal justice system treats kids as kids. The real problem here is the adults in the media and school system who treated this as a white supremacy hate crime before we knew all of the facts and then failed to revisit when new information became available.

NP here. The quoted article is from the Washington Times, but it is not their coverage. It is an opinion piece written by Manuel Miranda, an attorney representing one of the students involved. It's important to take the source into account.

It’s unfortunate that the revelation of the facts of the hoax had to come through an opinion piece, but if none of the other news outlets who initially covered the story inaccurately haven’t issued an update, that’s the only way the truth is getting out to the community.
