Hogan Wants Schools Open Statewide

As a Republican Governor, Hogan can say " Mr President, I told them to open, I've done all I can" while knowing full well the announcement was too late to have any impact.

It wouldn’t have made sense to say it earlier in the summer because our numbers didn’t meet the public health metrics...isn’t that kind of the point. And shouldn’t schools have been preparing to open when public health metrics were met instead of just deciding to stay closed until arbitrary dates?

But he never even said what the metrics were until last week, right? He didn’t have to give districts the all-clear a month ago, but he could have told them what the state was looking for. Some counties probably did meet the metrics at that point. Further, he could have shown more empathy and understanding that this is going to be hard and that the state would work with local jurisdictions to figure this out. Instead, he just came off as kind of a jerk and Kate to the party.

It's about to get interesting.

Because ALL districts should have a reopening plan instead of ONLY submitting a DL plan. This would be whether our metrics were okay to open or not. It is being prepared and not getting scrambled on what to do. MCPS thought they could sit on their asses in February. Was wanting to point fingers of all the schools opening on how terrible of an idea that was. Well, schools have been open in areas where metrics are higher and masks are optional. No one is dropping dead. Everything should have been planned and submitted before the school year started and slowly been put in place as the metrics got better.

I guess MCPS likes charging all the daycares rental fees instead.

I agree, some states required districts to have plans for each scenario. I don’t know why MCPS couldn’t think to do that on their own. Clearly not being run by the best and the brightest.

Frederick County, MD? They started the school year today, all virtual for the time being. There was a hybrid plan, but that's not what the county went with.

I think there is a lot of confusion or people purposefully misleading others. Many of the counties around here are 100% virtual for the quarter. Most are looking into hybrid this quarter for SPED/ESL, but that's it.

It's like how people were saying that countries like S. Korea had kids go back face to face.. yes, and then they shutdown because cases started to rise. They don't tell you that part or don't know about it.

MCPS lost the public by opening up school buildings die for profit daycares. Dumb move.
They also lost by at least not acting like they wanted our kids back. As a teacher I know this is all political. And MCPS should have played the game a lot better.

What was Hogan supposed to do when the state’s largest school district is letting kids pay $$ to enter a school building for learning while @ same time telling parents it’s totally unsafe... unless they pay KAH $500 a week...

Even the Eastern Shore is virtual.

He just wants it on the book that he said for kids to go back to school when he campaigns in red states.

+1. If there are a couple hot spots in MoCo and PG that are keeping their numbers higher than acceptable for reopening, why should that keep the rest of the counties from returning to in-person?

LOL, did COVID write this?

Do you know how viruses — highly contagious respiratory viruses— work?

This.

County execs and mayors think they can keep not applying CDC, Fauci, WHO, NIH, and state reopening guideline in weak efforts to convince voters that it’s somehow all trumps fault. metrics good, precautions feasible, yet they won’t let do it. Local Gov’t politicking with our kids educations.

No teachers union IN the schools this year, just paying students and daycare workers and chromebooks. Enjoy.

He won’t, but Hogan needs to take some responsibility and acknowledge that part of this mess is due to the lack of action/guidance from the state. Other states have been working with local school districts for weeks- meanwhile MD left it up to the districts to figure it out for themselves and then chimed in days before the school year was to get underway. Even counties that WANTED to open in some fashion were not willing to make that call on their own.

16 districts of 24 already submitted plans and were in talks with the state BEFORE Hogan's announcement. That is why so many have already released reopening plans over the last 48 hours. As of today, 20 out of 24 districts have submitted reopening plans. If that doesn't show what a piss poor job MCPS is doing, I don't know what is. They have always played politics and victim to Hogan. Always. The counties knew about it. Erlich is playing deer in headlights and he looks like an f'ing fool. And people like you look like a fool for believing everything Erlich and the MCPS say

Are you all going to complain on this board forever which will do nothing? If you want schools to open vote in November for a Federal government that will get this pandemic under control. That’s the only way to get schools to open and stay open.

If you mouth breathers still think our schools not opening is Trump's fault, then there really is no hope for you.

As a trumper, you are in no position to call someone a mouth breather.
