When your kids not very likable

Yeah, it was my least favorite "phase" with both of my kids.

+1 My stubborn, opinionated 7 year old was miserable from 1-2 because he knew exactly what he wanted but didn’t have the words to tell us. He’s never been an easy kid, but things got a lot better once he could talk to us. At 7 he’s happy and outgoing. And mostly a joy. But still stubborn. And still difficult when he doesn’t get his way.

Very simple - John giving you a warning stop whining or you are going in time out. 1....2....3 ok timeout.

I still use 1 - 2 - 3 magic with my son at 10 years old. He hasn't been in timeout more than 1 since he was 2. He hates time out so the countdown gets him to comply.

Child therapist here. This is bad advice based on DS’s age. Would be more appropriate for a 4 yr old. OP, our DC is similar, although the whining is frequent but not constant and it has gotten slowly through improved sleep and managing allergies better. Don’t rule out some medical factors at this point. Our DC still is a challenge to manage so there is temperament. With improved language skills, DC is able to express feelings which has also helped.
