Does your teen have a fake ID ?

Luckily, it was in his own name with the just the date of birth changed, so it is not a felony. He learned his lesson, I hope, but it is going to involve a court date and paying for an attorney.

Where was it found? Traffic stop? Did he try to use it somewhere and have it confiscated?

I don't agree that having a fake ID makes you a bad kid. I had one when I was a teen. I also had two part time jobs (25 hours a week total), was an honors student, and was super involved in student theater at my school. I mostly used the ID to get into clubs to go dancing with friends. I did use it to buy alcohol (beer) occasionally, but not frequently.

Me too. I had a really bad one by the time I was 15. Of course the drinking age was younger then.

Yes, traffic stop. He was the passenger in a car that was stopped for speeding and then searched.

I lot of you have a hard time wrapping your heads around the fact that some kids have zero interest in drinking alcohol <21 or smoking. Crazy, I know!

fwiw, I don't think they had them while still in HS.

A typical "not my kid" response. If his friends have it, your son has it too.

Seriously, do you think they're all going to bars, and he's virtuously staying home studying?

LOL high schoolers aren't "going to bars." They are, possibly, if they find the right shady store, using IDs to buy stuff and take it to somebody's house or the woods or wherever. Or maybe they just like the idea of having it. I can easily believe in a given friend group some have IDs and some don't. Doesn't mean the ones without aren't drinking. But they actually may not being doing exactly what their friends do.

In NJ and NY teens absolutely use them to get into clubs and such. It’s rare for a teen to not have one. And then when they get to college, everyone gets one because they won’t let you order a pitcher of margaritas for the table if one kid doesn’t have one. Nobody wants to be that kid, and nobody wants to invite that kid.

I’m from NY and had one from when I was 17. Everyone I knew did because we wanted to go to clubs. All of our parents knew and no one cared. It was common to get a replacement license for a younger sibling if you looked enough alike. I did that for my sister when I turned 18 so she could go to clubs and again when I turned 21. Clubs would let you in at 18 and mark you under.

I’m a responsible adult now. All of my friends grew up to be responsible adults.

Yes. Both my kids have 2. When you buy it you get 2, which I feel bad telling you guys since I think you will search your kids rooms to find 2.

I don't think it's a big deal, along the lines of driving 45 in a 35.

Also, it's not a felony. Using somebody's real ID is identity theft, but a fake is not.

It definitely is different per state and per town/city. Every college town is different.

Wait, how do you even get a fake ID? I've wanted to know since I was 15, and now I'm 46.

My sister ordered hers online. It shipped from China.

Back in the 90s in the NY, the coating was different. We changed the date with oil pencils then covered in hair spray. It was a form of art!

He grew up in a wealthy suburb and went to Harvard (before he was famous), so I’m sure your little perfect honors student children are doing the same thing.

Times have changed.

Both my kids had them in college, and told me. I didn’t worry too much because I knew they weren’t big drinkers. They’re both of age now and rarely drink at all.

My kid is not perfect and does plenty of stuff that he shouldn't do that we have frank conversations about. . He just doesn't happen to have his own fake ID. If you have enough friends with them, you don't really need one. It's not like he's trying to get into a bar during a pandemic.

Yes, so he can vote.

Once in college, I leave that stuff alone.
