What do teachers want?

+1. I'm just getting tired of all these "dog are my homework" excuses. Teachers you got your DL, now please put in some effort and actually teach our kids.

Parents, we understand you are unhappy ... but your kids will be safe and so will their teachers. Now please put in some effort and actually be a better parent.

I know this is hard to believe, but teachers are actually just human adults. I can't speak for every teacher, but I want people to stop being so selfish and short sighted and get serious about containing the virus. I want to move past this national nightmare so we can get back to living. I want the country's numbers to support us returning to school, work, and all the other institutions that hold our society together. I don't want to teach online, or in a dystopian classroom where students are stranded at their desks without any normal interaction. Looks like none of us will be getting our way.

I want to not end up on a respirator.

I want the s hills funded so that the right HVAC systems are installed, all sanitation is covered, class sizes are lowered, and parents don’t send sick kids to school.

This is exactly why I think we need two teacher training days!

That is called the weekend. You wanted this, you got it. It is going to be a lot more work to teach kids this way, but no one dies. So do it or quit.

You're evading the question. We have been better parents, but that's irrelevant. What will YOU do to be a better teacher? If anything, it looks like some unions are now even trying to wiggle out of DL. Please remember you are still getting *paid* to do *something*.

My DW and I both teach elementary grades. We want to be back in the classroom. That is what we enjoy.

Honestly I am not looking forward to distance learning. “Dread” might not be too strong of a word. It is not something I am trained to do. It is not something I even have the smallest desire to do, but I will do my best. I hope I will be at least be able to do distance instruction from within my classroom. I can’t quit. I need the paycheck and benefits.

They are going to milk DL for the whole year, mark my words. Have fun parents!

That was not the question. The question was, “Teachers, what do you want?” There is no evasion.

The “I don’t want to end up on a ventilator” panic is so 3 months ago.

I can tell you what I don't want...

I don't want to die of COVID.

I don't want anyone in my multi generational household to die of COVID.

I don't want my students or their families to die of COVID.

I don't want to spend the majority of my day policing my students incessantly to keep their masks on and keep their distance and go home and pray that no one caught anything that day.

I don't want to have to worry about keeping my eye on all my students in the narrow staircases of my school when they have to stand 6 feet apart and I can't keep them all in view.

I don't want to have to worry about the fact that I serve the entire school as a specials teacher and will be more exposed that everyone else.

I can go on...really. I'm just tired of having to defend what seems to be so obvious

So for all the teachers now claiming "I haven't gotten trained in teaching through DL," after DEMANDING IT, what do you think the rest of us have been doing? I am teaching huge numbers of students over DL this summer and did so last spring with only a few days turnaround. I figured it out because I had to, not because of endless "teacher training." If you are even moderately intelligent, you'll find a way. You have 4-6 weeks to prepare, now get cracking!

You also dont to want to spend 6 hours a day on zoom in small groups getting your students 2 hours of live instruction and another 2-4 hours planning and grading and emailing. But 10 hours a day for a year is what all of us are facing. I will demand my kids learn.

I am a teacher. My DW is a teacher. Neither of us demanded DL. I think it is going to be very difficult. Neither of us want to do DL, but we will have to. Nobody on my grade level team wants to do DL.

Please don’t lump all teachers together.

maybe let your union know that before they do the body bag protest.
