Data came from here: CHURCHILL: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/maryland/districts/montgomery-county-public-schools/winston-churchill-high-9153/student-body WOOTTON: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/maryland/districts/montgomery-county-public-schools/thomas-s-wootton-high-9149/student-body |
PP, your data is from 2018-2019 school year. The USNEWS data is for 2019-202 school year. Sorry you lose or should I quote your own words against you: “ Just a reminder to do your own research and not trust what people say on this board.” |
OK. I am not any of the PPs. All I can see is that the MCPS pdf indicated "2019 – 2020 Official Enrollment as of September 30, 2019" Looks good enough for me. |
You two are arguing over a few percentage points. Who cares. Each of the W schools’ student body is comprised of mostly Whites. But this entire thread is kind of dumb because it’s all based on biases and opinions without any factual information as to why any school is overrated. |
| If we are trying to equate average cost of living vs quality of educational outcomes among peer groups then the W schools are not a good value. I dont necessarily believe that the teaching and curriculum is somehow better at these schools. Students are just good at taking the basics and then running with it. I am also concerned that attending a W may make it harder to get into University of MD or selective college that dont want too many students from one high school. That could be a myth, but I have heard it repeatedly lately. |
I was a valedictorian at an absolutely terrible school in NC and had decent but not great SATs- I got into almost everywhere I applied and went to a NESCAC. There is no way I go to that school if my family had stayed in Bethesda and I finished middle of the pack at Whitman. If you can thrive in a bad school, it probably looks better |
| Madison in Vienna VA. Sports reign supreme with parents and administrators. If your kid doesn’t play, look out. Also a “mean girl” culture of entitlement that extends to the boys; all incubated by the extreme sports focus. |
+1 There's not one school in MoCo that would not be considered diverse. If you want to see "white" schools, check out some schools in the Midwest or New England. |
I think you need to compare socio economic diversity. Churhcill is LT 5% FARMS |
You have to look at the demographics of the entire state or county. Midwest states are mostly whites to begin with so how can its schools be diverse. Any school in our area that is 45% or above White is not really diverse |
| I've had 3 children graduate from Churchill and my youngest is a rising senior. Churchill under the new principal is definitely overrated. Since she took over two years ago, there has been a noticeable trend to de-emphasize academics. Priority number one is student feelings, discipline is non-existent and scores are going down. If she stays principal I would worry about what the school would like in four or five years. If you are looking for homes in the "W" clusters, I'd definitely favor Wootton or Whitman especially if you have children in upper elementary or middle school. |
OK, I will, thanks for the tip! |
?? lol omg you people |

God, these threads are just a forum to make nasty but heavily veiled bigoted comments about people of color and poor people - the undesirables that’s DCUM parents despise and can’t get far enough away from.
Aren’t there enough of these threads? And PP, if you want to understand school quality, why not talk to actual parents in with kids in these schools as opposed to some anonymous forum where people - mostly white UMC - can’t wait to sh/t on anyone who isn’t just like them. |
I guess the PP is quiet because he has no answers to his false assertions. |
