Do people who drive fancy and expensive cars ever feel awkard or self-conscious?

I don’t think anyone actually looks at Mercedes suvs... I wouldn’t consider it out of the ordinary. My FIL has a 75k truck.

My next door neighbor has 4 cars and each is worth at least 100k. Our houses are only worth 700k. They’re surgeons though and I know they can afford it. I just assume they like nice cars

No, I love my nice car

No. My DH has a BMW M5. Sticker price is a 100k. But you'd have to know it's that expensive in order to think it is "fancy." Most people don't.

We have a "cheap" car (think Honda), an in between car (think BMW) and a higher end car (think something you don't see that often on the road). People definitely treat you differently in each, which is more a reflection on them, and their vapid judgyness than anything else.

I think most men know (I'm a man) but women don't. This is why guys land their first decent job making 60k, buy a 328i and all the girls are like "oh wow he drives a REALLY nice car." Might as well be an M5 to them, lol

This. I don't really notice what other people drive or worry about assumptions people make about my cars. They work really well and are fun to drive - a porsche and a BMW. They are also over 10 years old but look in great shape.

It must be exhausting to worry about so many things like this.

I'd worry it could hurt my career and perception with colleagues, superiors and clients. Once on a business trip I was randomly given some super expensive Mercedes SUV rental and it felt like everyone was gawking whenever parked.

I think Tesla has mastered the fancy-but-subtle styling/branding – but so many people have fancy and flashy Range Rovers, Yukon Denalis, Escalades, BMW X7s, Porsche SUVs, expensive Mercedes sedans and SUVs, G-Wagons, Bentley SUVs they're practically a dime a dozen.

At the very least I feel like I'd need a second lower-key car when I didn't want anyone to notice me.

Anyone can lease a car

OP - it sounds like you are wanting to buy a Tesla or something else but worried about how it would make you look?

What you and everyone else who says this actually means: "without knowing anything about anyone, I assume anyone who drives a Mercedes, bmw, etc. IS an asshole." What that says about you: you are an asshole.

have you driven around the dmv? German cars are a dime a dozen. So are range rovers. Some buy them for safety. Some buy them because they are luxurious inside (and safe). Maybe some people buy them to show off. Who cares? I know people who spend almost as much money on certain kinds of Subarus to try to virtue signal.

This area is so neurotic about everything.

The OP must not realize in today’s market cars like BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover, Porsche, Volvo, are not exotic, especially the basic consumer lines like the X5, GL, Cayenne, 5 series and E classes, and nobody GAF. You can find tons of these on any air force base driven by E-5s. A married couple making a combined 120 a year can happily afford any of these.

No effing way can a married couple making 120k afford any of these. They can afford a used Mazda/Toyota. We make double that an have an Odyssey (that I love and wouldn’t trade for any SUV)

No my friend, a used Toyota is what someone making 25k a year can afford (think your high school janitor). It's normal for new college graduates starting at 50k to buy a new car for $25k. So why wouldn't somebody making 100k be able to buy a $50k car?

And they are evidence of the poor financial decision making happening. Our military tenants, single income, have a Corvette. They don’t even know how much side-eye and judgement they get amongst their neighbors. They are the Gen X version of the millennial avocado toast.

Maybe they don't care what you think. Corvettes are fun as hell to drive.

+1

And many of these “kids” were on deployments recently where they were earning premium pay and nothing to spend it on for almost a year. Or they got re-enlistment bonuses.

Being a 23 year old with a new, paid-for Vette is a lot of fun. You can have a family in a few more years, but for now? Be the young single military guy with the sports car and all the fun that comes with that.
