Georgetown is only allowing freshman and select seniors on campus

Yes. My daughter signed an off campus lease for Gu and just moved in yesterday.

You and your daughter are the problem.

Only if the student does not follow all the general pandemic precautions we all should be following. If she is coming from a state that must quarentine in DC, she should do so. She should mask and not attend large gatherings. Then she is no more risk then any other renter.

The reported number of cases at GU is misleading. It suggests a large outbreak on campus, but that isn’t what the number reflects. That’s the number of students, faculty, and staff members who have reported being Covid-positive since the beginning of the pandemic. It definitely doesn’t mean they got it on campus or were ever on campus while positive for Covid. I’m pretty sure it includes students who returned home with it from study abroad last spring. No doubt there are also people who got Covid but who did not report it to the university.

Correct. Georgetown reports every time a member of the university community reports a case, regardless of whether the person has physically been on campus recently; since this started in mid-March, I can’t remember seeing a case reported where the person had been on campus in the two weeks prior to a positive test.

OK, what's your point? You think when they all DO come together on campuses the cases will drop to zero?

Huh? My point is that the numbers of reported cases associated with Georgetown to date don’t actually represent on-campus cases; virtually all of the cases counted as being “at Georgetown” aren’t actually on campus (or even necessarily in DC) because so few people have been on campus since early March. Obviously, if we bring students back, that would change...which is why we aren’t bringing students back.

Not true. All students, staff, faculty are required to sign the Georgetown community compact (https://www.georgetown.edu/coronavirus/community-compact/), regardless of whether they are on campus.

The point was simply that the NYT data that the first poster cited is bad. Extremely sloppy reporting. (And I’m a liberal who subscribes to the NYT.)

dear lord.
Do you even have a college student?

My kid’s college said only freshmen on campus. The greek houses are on campus. Now every rental in the town (not exaggerating, there were actually bidding wars) is full of students taking online classes who are only there to party. Opening campus would have been safer for the students and the town.

NP. Maybe the Covid world will eventually weed out all the "students" whose main interest is in partying, not in education. They treat the privilege of going to college as if it's a right and a license to party. PP, unless your kid is a freshman, I hope your kid can do classes online form home because trying to live off-campus in that atmosphere sounds horrible and very bad for getting actual work done.

Are you sure all this is still happening with the campus closed?

Yes. Was reiterated in provost's note about the change to virtual last week.

I have heard students are not notifying the school that they are living locally to avoid the testing and restrictions. This seems to be common among students at various schools.

College kids will be college kids regardless of what they sign.
