Au Pair Visas / J-1 Visas now banned until 2021

I know many families treat au pairs well, but I have always been skeptical of the program because it is so ripe for abuse. Maybe this will force America to pass Domestic workers Bill of Rights?

Lots of rich people have au pairs. Of course Ainsley Earhardt recently mentioned hers. My friend was an au pair in Germany and worked for a celebrity actor there. And many many biglaw partners are in the program. There are more reasons to be in the program than the price point.

Ugh thirty million unemployed Americans. You suck!

You realize this may increase unemployment as people drop out to watch their kids? Right?

That's not unemployment. And if that's what happens, so be it. You aren't entitled to cheap foreign labor, and if you can't pay market rates for the labor you require, you get to do it yourself like the rest of us. I'm happy to see this change. Domestic workers have enough to worry about trying to get fair wages, having to compete with imported people who do their jobs for next to nothing should not be one of them.

If you consider that au pairs are barely out of teen years and have no formal nannying experience, then their market rate is the bottom of the barrel. That's not to criticize them but rather to recognize that a very young girl, most likely without a college degree, in her first nanny job isn't going to be making very much.

Because they can work odd/broken hours they’re popular with doctors, too.
