Who should the forts and bases be renamed for?

Stop naming them after people. Same goes for schools and whatever else needs to be named.

Confederates were not "traitors" to their states, at a time when the Union was still more of a concept than a reality. But yes, remove the names of Confederate generals from US federal bases. Whatever perceived benefit there was at the time (eg, restoring national unity after the Civil War) has long since passed.

I like the idea of naming them after a diverse selection of well-chosen Medal of Honor winners, but realize that our great-grandchildren will eventually find offense with something about each person and rename them again.

I support ideas like these:

Texas veterans want to rename Fort Hood after a Vietnam War hero and legendary badass:

Yes, you name a base 5244 and all of the sudden it turns it means Virgin slat in some other language or culture..

I actually like this one. A great way to get some funding.

Don’t make jokes about our service people who have their lives for us

I’m the 6:38 poster who initially made the “joke.” I served in the Marine Corps for 20 years and I’m a veteran of the Iraq War.

You need to lighten up.

I love your idea. Who wouldn’t want a Fort Wolverine?

Anonymous wrote:Fort Bragg should definitely be renamed after Army Ranger Pat Tillman.

Tillman embodied exactly the kind of dedication to this country that personifies the Rangers and Green Berets. He walked away from millions of dollars and a successful NFL career to enlist in the Army after 9/11. He fought bravely in countless battles, and was killed by friendly fire.

If Pat Tillman doesn’t deserve to have a base named after him, then literally NO ONE deserves to.

He also wanted to leave early and go back to the NFL because he “didn’t believe in the mission anymore.”
Sorry, but honoring your obligations is a big test he fails...

Everyone needs to lighten up on renaming. These names are historical and named after significant contributors. You won’t find someone from the 18th century that wasn’t a slave owner - who cares, many of these people did great things for our country (Washington, Jefferson, Madison, etc.). Slave ownership was normal, we can’t look down on people from 100s of years ago doing something that was considered commonplace. Yes, we have evolved in our thinking but that shouldn’t erase historical contributions. Enough is enough already.

This. There are plenty valiant and courageous men and women in the military past and present. We shouldn't name things after generals that we're racists and lost a war. Seriously. .

If a person is chosen, they better run a background check first. Otherwise we'll be right back here in a year.

I'd rather not have any forts or bases named after a real person. People are flawed, that's a fact. We might find something unacceptable about the person in the future.

I heard the crickets when it was revealed Martin Luther King Jr. watched and laughed as one of his friends raped a woman.

Least of my concerns right now.

I suggest Geronimo or names of Native tribal leaders. Given that their tribes agree to this, which they might not like at all.

Did you know the Native American tribes warred with each other and took the losers as slaves?

Medal of Honor winners.

I'm shocked Trump isn't behind re-naming bases. He'd obviously name them all after himself.
