WHY DO I LOOK SO UGLY ON ZOOM?

Anonymous
1) I changed out my light bulbs for Zoom meetings, using brighter daylight LED ones. The old bulbs were warmer and unflattering.
2) Camera at eye level or slightly above.
3) I wear more makeup than usual. I usually don’t wear foundation, but I use it now to even out my skin tone. Definitely darken the brows (they can look washed out)
4) I wear brighter colors on top.
5) simple hair style.
6) my background is terrible, so I am changing it to look more professional (painting, books)

Honestly, it's probably because we're all a bit lackadaisical with grooming/beauty routines right now. I know I am. In ye olde days when we were in the office and clients who were based out of state would zoom into meetings, I would have makeup and hair done and look nice. Now if my hair is in a ponytail and little makeup, I look meh.

I felt the same way.. its not a perfect solution but this has helped.
I took the shade off a lamp and put it on the other side of my laptop and I look much better.. Shade on may work for you,, play around.. point was having the light in front of your face.. Also propped the lamp and lap top up on a few magazines..
Light make up. Tinted moisturizer, blush, mascara and tinted lip balm.

Knew you would eventually show up...

Make sure you're viewing Zoom with the mirror effect turned on. You look to yourself how you look in the mirror. To everyone else, you look the same as you always do. It's distracting to see yourself "in reverse".

Hell yeah. I looked liked a criminal in those things. Like a bad mug shot after a bender.

I am new to Zoom. How do I check to see how I look before I join a meeting? And how do you turn on the mirror effect?

This. There is a great Youtube video about how to set up lighting (you even can seat in front of the window if you need to), where to put your computer, angle of your face. I was so happy I found it on the first week of lockdown, because I was one of those 40+ years morons who doesn't know how to do a good selfie.

You are welcome

This. Also wear mascara and blush. Don't wear black or dark blue. It washes out pale skin. (If you're white). Don't wear patterns. I always wear something pinkish or a pink infinity scarf That way light reflects from the scarf to my face and gives me a nice glow.

Women should wear jewel tones, men should wear pastels. Wear layers if you can to give depth and definitely do the above: raise the camera, light from the sides, not above.

Put a light behind your computer. It makes all the difference.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a clip on one that would work on an iMac? Where I sit in my office, the light is either overhead or behind me. I don't want a fancy, YouTube ready effect, just not looking like the ghost of Christmas past any more.
