Can't stop thinking about children in unsafe homes

Ok, this happens all the time all over the world.

Homeschooling is already hiding a lot of child abuse, and those children are largely unreachable, thanks to advocacy by HSLDA and other homeschooling and religious groups. It's a travesty, but was a travesty pre-coronavirus.

What’s your source for this?

Source for what? Homeschooling hiding child abuse? Or HSLDA's lobbying work? Or something else? I am not sure exactly what you are looking for. However, there is quite a bit out there on these subjects. Here are a few places to start:

Child abuse and homeschooling:

https://www.foxnews.com/us/house-of-horrors-child-abuse-cases-reveal-how-offenders-nationwide-use-homeschooling-to-hide-their-crimes

HSLDA:

There is a lot of discussion on the subject out there if you look. I just picked a few links that are easy starting spots, but I would encourage you to look around further and do your own reading, if you are interested.

Our lockdown Governors must be held accountable.

Abuse isn’t limited to poverty. Schools also help find abuse in other socio economic groups

Yes Op reason #50 why we need to reopen.

+1 I was just going to respond with the same suggestion. SCAN is an amazing charity. They are great to follow on social media but I really like getting their newsletters. A recent email talked about the uptick in cases but decrease in interactions with people who would normally report. So scary

Yes. Yes. YES. As a former teacher, this makes me twitchy.

I heard the ICU at INOVA is full and overflowing. Government website says 177 new cases today. This is a very sad time all around.

(Btw, I work in education and there are plenty of UC/UMC parents with poor parenting skills.) Now, while there is no excuse for abuse, it benefits the kids to help parents through financial support or other ways during this time. There is a big difference between the parents who lock kids in sheds and those who have no option but to work while kids have limited parental supervision or are stressed and yell occasionally. I feel kids in the latter situation too, but maybe we can do more to help them by supporting the parents and it could make a big difference.

Some of the posts in this thread refer to poverty, most don't. Mine didn't because I know that this isn't a poverty issue. Child abuse doesn't bypass any socioeconomic category.

Inova isn’t close to capacity. Regardless, the people in the ICU aren’t kids. We can’t save everyone and our country needs to put those with 70+ years of living ahead of them before the elderly. Of course they won’t because children can’t vote or get on their computers to complain.

Fake news. NONE of the DMV hospitals have been overflowing. They cleared out the DC convention center to build a make shift Covid care hospital, like the Javitz Center in NYC and it is not in use. The Covid deaths are mainly elderly and people with comorbities. 9 US children have died from related symptoms. Follow the data not the media or politicians.

That is the most that can be done. Abuse is a criminal matter, not something to be handled by teachers

Though not always.
Especially in the tragic case of poor, little Gabriel Fernandez.

Except it's a million times worse. Just go watch a few short documentaries about poverty in developing countries on youtube (Philippines). You will feel much better about US problems after watching the videos

Oh Jesus! I watched a few documentaries of places around the world ( Pakistan, India, China and Philippines). Omg. I literally threw up. I was sickened and then had a hard ugly cry. My first thought was shame! They should all be sterilized. Then, I wanted to fly over there and save them and be a great white hope and save them with my US dollars. Then, I realize how lucky Americans are to have a government with rules against child labor, sex trafficking/ abuse. One tiny 7 yo girl in Pakistan worked at a brick yard all day everyday, with hardly any food, and deformed feet. She hurt herself and they ousted her and left her to die to save the meal for another working kid. Then, the Filipino's living under bridges and selling their girls into sex slavery to avoid feeding her and to get a few coins is sick to the core. Even with US cases, our country's mindset is not desperation that allows this depravity to go on.
