Doesn't like the students it attracts. Gives high marks to the profs and academics though.

I am the poster whose friend’s daughter is transferring out. She’s headed to UMD which was one of her choices as a senior. Yayas- acc to my friend her daughter felt oppressed by the constant let’s talk about our feelings and be in community and connect type of vibe. She def won’t get that at Maryland!

What are the students like?

My D is at Davidson and loves it (home now though). However, she is an extrovert and says that the campus vibe (very social, everyone knows each other, professors know students by name, only one dining hall) better suits the extroverted. There is no place to hide for the more introverted students. She certainly has some more introverted friends but she says the only unhappy kids she knows in the 1st yr class are the least social.

I was there for freshman year and transferred out. Very preppy, very southern, very Republican, and great (but challenging) academics. The frat scene was prominent if you wanted to socialize.

I went there first for the strong academics and “traditional” college campus experience, but ultimately felt it was all a bit suffocating and opted for a larger urban school in the Northeast.

That’s not to say people can’t thrive there as clearly many people like it. Still in touch with a few old classmates and they have all done very well professionally afterwards. Everyone is smart but the scene wasn’t right for me.

This was 10+ years ago so maybe things have changed slightly but that was my experience.

DH researched it somewhat like W&L but in NC.

I'm sorry it wasn't your scene but your characterization is inaccurate. It suggests that you only felt comfortable in a larger school environment that is primarily liberal kids from the Northeast and still feel the need to justify your decision.

Davidson is about 40% Southern and many of the kids from the South are liberal Democrats, as is also the case for the students who come from the rest of the country. That is true now; it has also been the case for several decades.

Not PP but always find it funny that on the basis of one post this person can credibly try to conclude this “suggests that you only felt comfortable in a larger school environment that is primarily liberal kids from the Northeast and still feel the need to justify your decision.”

This person revealed relatively little about their overall political views or even where they eventually wound up at school. And just because the school is in the northeast doesn’t mean it’s filled with liberal kids from the northeast.

And saying Davidson is a liberal school is a bit of a stretch IMO....my sibling went there and would agree.

I have no dog in this fight whatsoever--just interested in Davidson for my DC--but in fact, the PP did open the post claiming it was "very southern, very Republican," so in fact the PP did "reveal" something about their political views and how they felt about southern Republicans. Just saying...

No one said it was a "liberal school," but PP incorrectly said it was "very southern, very Republican."

Best to read before posting.

PP did make a point of emphasizing "liberal democrats", so yeah I think they are trying to say it's a liberal school? It's not.

Sounds like it's a school with diversity of political views. Several people I know who've gone there are very liberal.

But some people can't tolerate schools with more than a few token conservatives. Davidson would not be a good choice for them.

Do you actually have to take a test proving your idiocy before posting on DCUM?

DH went there. Student body not very diverse. Generally skews to white and affluent. Politically, there's a regional divide with the southerners tending to be more conservative and the northerners more liberal. (guess that reflects America?) That said school not overwhelmingly conservative as people are indeed from all over the country and world, although not exactly a mecca for grungy types either. Not much of an artsy crowd. Great academics, all his friends have great careers now.
