I don't get it. Can't you delink that your mental state from that one response? Not sure how your sense of your own masculinity is linked to this one action.

By "this one action" do you mean "being sexually rejected by his wife?" Sexuality is a deeply important part of the human experience. If the one person in the world he's allowed to have sex with tells him that he's not worth having sex with, it can be pretty damaging. Oh, sure, she can dress it up by saying it's just a dry spell or it's not him, it's her. Those things might even be true. But they almost never feel true. So, f-it, donuts.
