Quick healthy breakfast ideas and schedule tips for early mornings?

Anonymous
Kids have to be out the door at 6:50.

Wake up 6:10
They get dressed while I make breakfast (veggie muffins/veggie sausage biscuit/bagel + fruit + milk
They eat 6:20-6:30 and put dishes in dishwasher
They go upstairs and finish getting dressed/brush teeth/get backpack
Back dowstairs at 6:45 to put on shoes/coat/and throw food into their lunch boxes.

Backpacks need to be packed and ready the night before. They only bring snacks to school so there is no lunch packing (when they did, it was prepped the night before.) They wear uniforms so no debating clothes.

One child sometimes likes to shower in the morning vs the night before, in those cases, he gets up at 5:45.

We've been on this schedule for 3 years and so far so good.

Currently, her elementary school starts at 9:20am and she can walk, but she'll have to leave the house by 6:30am to catch a 6:45am bus. She prefers to shower at night so that will be one thing off her plate early morning, but I'm curious for those of you with kids with similar early schedules, what time they get up and what they eat for breakfast that's easy and healthy?

Same change--maybe same schools? My kid has never been a big breakfast eater and this make sit harder. Smoothies are my best rec.

OP here. Hunt Valley ES to Irving MS??

But honestly, I'd look for a different school that starts later. It's elementary school kids who should be getting up at 6:30. Tweens and teens need their morning sleep.

Unfortunately all of Fairfax County middle schools start at this time, other counties too, I imagine. My oldest is starting middle next year and doesn't even wake up for elementary until 8am - Our whole house is dreading the change!

We are experiencing this right now, having gone from 920 ES start to 720 MS start. My child is on the bus by 645, waking around 610. It is so incredibly, awfully, and horribly hateful. I cannot even describe it. Every parent/kid I know are zombies and hate the start time. So, I'm sorry to say there is no way to ease your feelings on this. Get as much stuff laid out, packed, and ready the night before. Then you can push the wake time as late as you are comfortable.

For breakfast, it's largely cereal or nutella/toast, with a vitamin.

We are ending the second quarter and i told DC we are 1/4 the way through with middle school. I curse Fairfax ever.single.morning.

Omg!! You are type of poster that made me so nervous and anxious for my child to start middle school. Just stop it! It’s not that bad.

Op- my child is in eighth grade. We also came from an elementary school that started at 9:20. It’s not that bad. They adjust to it very quickly. I let my child sleep as late as possible. In elementary school I got him up like an hour plus before school so he could have some time to play or whatever before school. Now he sleeps until it’s almost time to leave. I wake him up and have breakfast ready downstairs. He gets dressed, comes down and eats, brushes teeth, combs hair, deodorant etc in the downstairs bathroom and his shoes and backpack are ready by the door. The morning routine takes 20 minutes or so.

For breakfast we do either cereal, jimmy dean breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, or waffles or pancakes. He eats healthy foods at lunch and dinner. For breakfast we just do something quick.

We have gone through this shift and my kids are not morning people. Sometimes I make them Eggs and toast but usually all they want is a quick bowl of cereal. They just aren’t hungry enough for a big breakfast that early in the morning.

Move to LCPS. Middle school bus comes at 8:00. Even my ES child’s bus doesn’t come until 7:25.

And my kids eat cereal w/milk 100% of school mornings. It is not even discussed.

Teach them how to make eggs in a pan takes about 2min.

We're in same boat, loved our 8:30ish bus time in elementary, hating our 6:30ish for MS.
Honestly, my kids adjusted better than I did (not morm person). I let them sleep as late as possible, and prepare thier bfast & lunch as they get ready.
Hang in there, it's only for 2yrs - so I get/agree why FFX made this switch, otherwise it would have been a looong 4yrs!!

I disagree. I'd rather my kid not eat any food than eat packaged food. That way, when it's lunch time, he/she will be hungry for actual real food.

Walkabout omelet (egg, tortilla, can add veggies, cheese, sour cream and salsa, meat, etc)

I’m the pp and I agree, middle school is 2 short years. I’m up at that time already anyways because I leave for work when my son leaves for school. I’ll enjoy sleeping a little later when he goes to high school next year, but it’s honestly not that bad as the other pp makes it seem. And if you act like it is, your kid will be miserable about it too.

My 7th grader gets up at 6:00, leaves to catch the bus at 6:40.

I wake up at the same time, and stumble around in my bathrobe getting him a quick breakfast while he gets ready. A toasted English muffin and a banana, or a couple scrambled eggs, or a bowl of oatmeal. And, yes, the occasional cinnamon roll. Big cup of milk.

It was an adjustment, for sure, but it's only two years. He's handling it fine. And I am actually appreciating getting to work earlier than normal.

We paid our dues with the (FCPS) hideous early middle school years and are now enjoying the later start high school years. At least middle school is only two years.

Apple slices with peanut butter have been a go-to recently.

Hate to tell you, but your kid is probably scarfing down donuts and Little Debbies muffins the second they get to school.

My current 6th grader has never been hungry in the morning. Looking ahead, middle schools lunch for 7th grade will be at 10 or 10:30 which will be perfect. He will throw some type of bar in his backpack to eat in the morning if he’s hungry then eat something substantial at lunch. Then he will eat again when he’s out of school at 2:30. I can’t eat much at 6:30 either.
