This is what I say. |
So when we shorten it to Pret, should it actually be Pray, with no t? Maybe saying the whole thing is safer after all! |
Or you could argue that the shortened form is Pret because that's where people choose to stop in pret/amanzhay Everyone at my office says "Pret," and pronounces the t. |
You're right. |
I wouldn’t say that, because I don’t even know what that is! |
you are easy to impress and confuse. |
| Since it's french, I don't feel obligated to pronounce the whole thing. So I will say pret ah monj. And stop there since french people always just quit talking in the middle of words. |
| J not zh |
| I remember going in Heathrow airport a decade or so ago. It was really, really good! I wished we could have one in the US. Flash forward to last week, I was in NYC and there was one seemingly on every single corner in midtown. I went twice and the food was GROSS. Bland, boring, blah. I think they expanded too fast. |
'j' is not helpful as it can be interpreted as soft or hard, like the j in jam is hard and the j in the French male name Jean is soft. |
| Pret Ah Mong Zhay -- zh like the "s" in treasure |
|
I pronounce it:
o-ver-pric-ed-crap-py-food |
::grasps chipotle chicken and avocado wrap menacingly:: |
| And the only reason the t in Pret is pronounced at all, is because it is followed by a vowel! |
I wish Pret would come to SF.
