Can we talk about Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the Billboard awards last night?

I have no clue why she keeps whining victim. The music industry will not change - the labels take chances on new artists they lose their investment on the vast majority.

Why should she have to buy back her own property? Did she get any money at all from the sale of her music?

I didn't listen to her speech. If she cast it as men taking advantage of women, perhaps she should read the history of the Beatles catalog.

Unfortunately, musicians aren't necessarily talented business people, and even when they are, they may make deals that weigh out differently early in their career vs later in their career.

I don't understand what these things are.

Remember Richard gears character in pretty woman? It’s like that.

How old was she when she made the deal? Did she agree to this as a teenager or a 25 year old?

Of course she gets scads if money from every song. She sold her ownership rights. Think of it this way: you sell a painting that was commissioned (you were paid to paint this for the owner). The owner then sells the painting to someone the artist doesn’t like. Do you think the artist has the right to take her painting back? She can certainly buy it back (as could Taylor).

I get the impression that she did not understand that she had sold her ownership rights in the first place.

Since someone else now "owns" her songs, does she now have to get their permission to perform them in concert? Does she have to pay them a fee if she does perform them? How does that work?

Yes she has to get permission. That is why she could not perform her songs at the last awards show.

That is terrible.

Warning, it's a looong speech, but very much worth it. She calls out so many people and issues that cut across all industries....yet I am also a little putt off by it. Interested to hear thoughts from others.

Her father, her manager made a bad business deal and that’s why she doesn’t own the rights to her music. It’s not because she’s a woman, it’s because she’s uneducated and didn’t understand what was going on. She should have stayed in school. Sick of listening to her whine. Grow up Tay Tay.

This is sad. It sounds as though she and her dad were hoodwinked into agreeing to something that they did not understand. How would signing her right away to her own music have ever been beneficial to her? Why would any artist agree to that?

It's not o.k. to trick people like that.

Isn't her father in attorney? Perhaps she should sue him for making this bad deal on her behalf.

I don't know. I thought he was some sort of executive. I guess my question is, was he qualified to be making these types of long lasting contractual decisions for his daughter. Did he understand that he was signing away her right to ownership of her songs? When did Taylor become aware that she did not own her songs? Honestly, it sounds as though both Taylor and her dad were duped.

It seems that if Taylor was a minor at the time these deals were being made that she should have been required to have an attorney who was specialized in these types of deals present to explain it all to her.

Taylor is over 30 and a billionaire. Stop the f**king whining and act like an adult. Make a deal.

I’m really bored by Taylor Swift. This belly-aching is ridiculous. Sit down with Scooter Braun and make a deal. This bad publicity is not helping you.

She creates contracts now that not only keep her own interests in mind but make sure sing writers, procurers, etc get a fair deal since they have no bargaining power.

Nope nope. This is just part of Taylor's poor little victim narrative, but it's not actually true.
