It IS posted in MD.

It was moved from the DC forum.

I think it used to be a popular option before all the schools close to the DC boarder became over crowded and stopped accepting extra students.

Nothing. Just find a fake relative in MoCo and use their mailing address for a few things and drop your kid off before the bus comes

This exactly. Commonplace and widely accepted as a way to attend MCPS without living in the county.

If I find out your kid lives in another county, I am reporting you and referring your child and their address to the dedicated county PPW worker. As a teacher I’ve reported Howard County students (easier commute for HoCo parents), Prince George’s residents and most recently a resident of Fairfax Co.

One would be surprised at the number of parents that try to game the system. Parents should also step up and pressure the principal or teacher for information when a bully or ill behaved child in their children’s class is acting out. Sometimes the ill mannered child is not actually attending their correct school.

Not widely accepted at all. They get reported and pulled all the time in Bethesda and south silver spring.

Disagree. DP. Teacher at a Silver Spring MS popular with PG County families. I’m sympathetic and would absolutely do the same if my children had to go to the MS those students are zoned to attend. I just wish the students wouldn’t confess to us that they are out of district.

circa $20,000

It costs $16000 at a MCPS Title 1 school (Fed and property tax funded) and $13000 at a MCPS non-Title 1 school (property tax funded).

Just a heads-up. The quality of teaching and the atmosphere really depend on the school. I love Walter Johnson, and BCC, Whitman not so much. Walter Johnson has the selective APEX program which is great.
Since all the best high schools are overcrowded, you'd have to rent somewhere, at least on paper.

Take a look at the current APEX thread on this forum. It seems that the "selective" APEX program at Walter Johnson is being transformed into something less selective. Typical MCPS.

For that, you could afford some privates/parochials--that's what we pay for ours (not one of the Big 3s, obviously, which are more like 35-40K). Don't think I'd want MCPS with their overcrowded classrooms, 2.0 curriculum mess, etc. We'd gladly go back to our IB Deal feeder before MCPS.

Sounds like you used to be in DCPS, but now have chosen private. So it sounds like your knowledge of MCPS comes primarily from DCUM.

PP here, you're right. If it brings you any comfort, we would never do VA schools, since we'd much rather live in MoCo than VA, if given the choice. We used to live inbound for one of the "Ws" in MoCo, but that was before kids were school-aged.

We are in private for now, but may head back to DCPS for middle and/or high school, depending on how things go. That decision is still a few years away.

I can’t imagine moving to MCPS if you have the Deal then Wilson option.

Maybe in Bethesda, but not at our Germantown MS. There are plenty of families who live outside of MCPS, but use a false address. Impossible to prove that Larla doesn't actually 'live' with grandma and grandpa.

Also, it's a bit fuzzy on whether it's fraud. If the grandparents are paying property tax in MoCo, then the families feel they have a right to send the kid to school there.

I can’t imagine sending my kids to deal or Wilson. So we are even. They are good for DC which is not the same thing as good. The only reason Wilson’s graduation rate went up from 71% a few years ago is they stopped making attendance necessary for poor kids to graduate. You keep you APs up you will be ok but for the rest of the kids DC diplomas mean you didn’t get locked up (for too long) before the age of 18. Little else

We had the Deal/Wilson option and moved to MCPS. Happy with our choice. Some of our friends’ kids are not happy with Deal—overcrowded and bursting at the seems. And many people we k ow are unhappy with Wilson, particularly under the current principal.
