Do you say you’re from Washington or DC?

Bay Area - another pet peeve. You Tampa people think you have the only bay in the world? Or are you from Annapolis?

East Coaster here. When someone says 'Bay area' they mean San Francisco and Oakland. Annapolis barely registers as a bay and Tampa has the population of a SF suburb for geriatrics.

True. I was looking for something in South Bay... Boston and my iphone came up with California... even though I was standing in South Bay.

Depends on how far away I am from home. In the Mid-Atlantic? DC. In Ohio? Washington, DC. But in my heart of hearts, I am DC all day long and forever, not Washington.

I say DC or Washington DC, depending on the company. If they need to know more specifically I say VA, just outside Washington DC.

And yes, “DC” is a place. What else would it be?

Do you know what the DR is?

To me, Dominican Republic

They don’t know DC is the nations capital?

No. they know Washington DC is the nations capital though.

Then they need to open a book, map, tv, etc. I get if someone doesn’t know Maryland but not DC.

If I lived outside Washington state, wouldn't that mean I lived in Oregon? And I'd say "Oregon"?

Maybe try saying just outside DC.

Get out of your bubble. "DC" is not a place, and it's presumptive to think that everyone knows what you mean, especially if you are traveling internationally.

I know the capitals of most major nations. If you don't know what D.C. is, I don't know what to tell you.

+1 Thank you!

Hold up, DC is not a place? What is it?

I say C.C. Or "The Chase". Or just south of North Bethesda.

It's jargon, an abbreviation, an acronym, but no, it's not a place.

You’re not understanding. People know what DC is, but they know it as “Washington, DC.” As lots of people have already pointed out, it’s a local term.

So NYC isn't a place either? What about HK?

*gasp* We need to alert the media! Places with millions of residents have disappeared off the map.
