2nd white woman stabbed to death in DC in less than a year.

All you hate crime suggesters folks wondering if white people are being targeted as a group sound unhinged. The answer is No.
A mentally ill man who wanted to take a life saw a woman walking a large dog and stabbed her in the back in a random and violent attack. That knife wound happened to be fatal. It is TRAGIC. It is/was not a hate crime (beyond a hate for life and those who are enjoying theirs).

What are you basing this on?

A black man viciously stabbing a random white woman to death in a gentrifying neighborhood. Do you think such murders only warrant investigation as a possible hate crime if the killer wrote a manifesto?

This lady is f%cking dead.

Who cares if it was a "hate" crime or not?

I am sure she would simply prefer to be alive.

That's exactly what people who don't think we need extra hate crime laws say. Murder is murder. Would you dispense with hate crime terminology? Doesnt seem like DC has been doing a great job of investigating them anyway.

Are you the same poster who only cares about rape when you can pin it on an immigrant?

Thank you!

So he was reported mentally ill and got no treatment. Now two lives are destroyed. We are failing on mental illness as a society and these afflictrd people are ticking time bombs. Given this years body count, why is the Mayor not starting a task force on this?

It looks that way. https://wjla.com/news/local/police-man-22-missing-last-seen-over-the-weekend-in-northwest-dc

"Aregahegne was wearing a black jacket and black pants. Police say he may need medication."

(possible, but doubtful, that this is a different Eliyas Aregahegne. He was his HS Valedictorian).

He also was a Posse scholar/ it’s a prestigious college scholarship program. Sad all around.

Wow. What in the world??

Aren't you aware that schizophrenia hits in late teens/early 20s?

That’s very possibly what this is. Was he just released from the hospital?

Becoming a trend.

Setting aside the question of motivation, what these cases do point to is that it's not as safe as it should be to be a woman moving around DC alone. None of these cases would have happened to a man. Some of them were in nicer neighborhoods, some were during daylight... it wasn't a matter of not taking proper precautions (and it's frustrating to begin with that women spend everyday having to think about things like this). Women in this city are too dangerously vulnerable and that's really sad.

Earlier this week there was a man stalking mothers with their children on Capitol Hill. Thankfully neighbors banded together and he was arrested on other charges. But if you can't even go for a walk with your child in broad daylight and feel safe, we're doing something wrong.

Is important because we could see ourselves in her shoes, normal, middle class, not criminals doing normal thinga and then get randomly killed so sad.

I feel like blaming black men is a distraction, much like blaming mass shootings on white men is a distraction.

There's something really wrong when young male adults in this country, period. Regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, etc.

All too often it's a hate crime against women. Men of every background have a tremendous sense of deep rooted violent misogyny. I say this as a mixed women.

Hey racist trolls - why don't you look at the actual hate crime statistics, which demonstrate that black people are disproportionately charged with hate crimes?

BTW a hate crime (regardless of the race of the perpetrator) is hard to show. You have to demonstrate that the crime was motivated by the victim's protected class, which, in the case of a high/mentally ill person, is unlikely to be provable to a jury.

Seems most hate crimes motivated by race/ethnicity in DC tend to be against minorities, not whites:

"There were 75 suspected hate crimes in 2018 motivated by race or ethnicity, up from 65 in 2017, The Post found: 26 against African Americans, 24 against Hispanics, 15 against whites, six against Asians, three against people perceived to be of Arab descent and one against all nonwhites."

Btw, this is an interesting article. Seems there are lots of hate crimes against sexual minorities in DC.

On a per capita basis it would appear that hate crimes whites are disproportionally high.

Isn't DC almost 1/2 white at this point?
