How do you know OP didn't apply to MV 8th Street? Perhaps they didn't get in... |
Bingo! It’s sad but in DC our expectations is so low that we are glad that a large cohort of kids are just competent at grade level (i.e. PARCC 4). Grade level mind you, not above grade level. When you have an overwhelming majority of kids below grade level (> 60-70%), we all know where the focus of teaching will be. I’m not saying PARCC is the be all and end all but it’s the standard indicator of competency. I realize that poverty plays a significant factor here but reality is that the achievement gap just widens as you go up in grades as things get more complex as many middle class parents find out and then bail their IB school. |
That’s not really possible, P street has a fraction of the openings of MV8. |
Maybe they got a really good master number? |
OP here. Uh, we did apply to 8th street, but we listed in order of true preference at the time, and we put MV P Street higher because it was an already-established location. Honestly, I didn't think we would get in to P Street. I thought we *might* have a chance at MV8. And for everyone dragging Burroughs, have *you* been inside it? Have you met the teachers or the PTO leadership? I have. I will admit that I judged Burroughs pretty hard from the outside and from neighborhood gossip. But when I visited, I was pleasantly surprised. The PK3 and PK4 spaces are really nice. And the music room was very impressive. MV doesn't even have a music room. I'm not saying Burroughs is better, just that it's not as bad as I thought it was. Thank you for everyone who spent the time to share a thoughtful, compassionate response. |
So what did you decide? |
Sure but bottom line is parents would put their child in a highly performing dingy school any day over a poorly performing school with decent facilities. Look at the millions and millions of dollars spent renovating the EOTP high schools. You think anyone is saying I’ll put Johnny in that beautiful renovated school? Nope not going to happen. |
I'm not sure the difference is that stark, performance-wise. Sure, MV has 4 stars/67.2 score compared to Burroughs' 3 stars/58.7 rating, but Burroughs also has an at-risk population of almost 50%, whereas MV's at risk population is around 10%. I'm not sure the delta is that impressive, given the difference in student body. This is not to dog MV at all, and if dual language is your goal, it's a good option (and I know a lot of lovely families who send their kids there, if you are into anecdata!), but I wouldn't assume the quality of the education is necessarily better than what you would receive at Burroughs. OP--did you make a decision yet? |
It wasn't PARCC scores at DCI--it was comparison of 3rd-5th grade PARCC scores for DCI feeders. I don't think it's possible to get middle school PARCC data based on the feeder school. This MV parent says everything you mention is valid, but we still like it there. You might also be happy at Borroughs. Good luck with whatever you choose! |
How far behind were the MV kids, and what is the plan to improve? |
The DC School Report Cards make this kind of comparison easy (no crunching required). Whether it's valid is another story. I've got some time start your homework for you (you can tease out the grade by grade level data if you wish). As for improvement, you need to ask the MV leadership. I"m not even sure that competing against the other feeders on this measure is their goal. For 2018 School / 4+ ELA / 4+ Math / 3+ ELA / 3+ Math (grades 3/4/5 combined) MV /45.2%/47.2%/65.6%/68.6% DCB /32.8% / 30.2% / 62.4% / 58.3% LAMB/60%/38.3%/86.6%/72.5% YY/58%/58.8%/85.7%/84% Stokes 41.2%/38.5%/67.1%/69.2% |

I wasn't involved in this analysis, but my guess is that whoever did it actually looked at the data by subgroup and grade, and that's where it was evident that MV was underperforming.
For example, if you look (via the DC School Report cards) at MV compared to DCB, for 4+ on PARCC: 1. For ELA, DCB has higher PARCC scores for black, hispanic, at-risk, ELL and students with disabilities. Basically, on every measure where you can compare the two schools directly, DCB has higher scores. 2. For math, MV does very slightly better than DCB for hispanic students, but MV scores are lower for black, at risk, ELL, and students with disabilities. |
Thanks for posting this. I'm the OP, and we have decided to give MV a chance. We will re-evaluate in December and the end of the year. If it's not a good fit, we will switch to Burroughs. Thanks for everyone who engaged. |
!!! Thanks, PP. This type of data crunch is always missing from these convos. |
| I’m a brookland parent too, and even though MV is a shit show, I’d go for it and if I didn’t like it I’d switch for Burroughs next year. |
