Spices served at least two functions in hot countries. It covered up the taste of less than fresh meats and helped with preservation.

Salt and hot spice are critical in hot weather.

You sound like my superstitious friend who thinks women need to drink cow's milk to make milk, or my MIL who thinks eating rice with curry will bring doom to your household.

And, the obvious implication, if you are poor you can't afford fresh meat. Ergo, spicy foods are low class.

Are you off you rocker?? I lived in Africa, Sahara and Sub Saharan, main staple is beans and rice and flat breads. And spicy food! Salt is a must for hot climates, you sound like a total moron trying to sound "woke" about food! WTF!

In this weather, after my dad had been out all day mowing and weeding and digging fence post holes, he’d come inside to take a break and drink a beer that he had sprinkled with salt.

Not sarcasm. Lol. I just had to put that out there to see if OP got the vapors.

So all summer you sip a smoothie? Uggh.

LOL! Love you! Plus, everyone knows we must drink beer to have milk! Like so much beer!
And my mom(white European) decided that she can't eat rice anymore, ate it till 2 years ago. Went to Indian restaurant with me and didn't eat rice! Now, she says she can't have rice, had it her whole life, and spicy food is bad for you! Ate spicy curries by loads 3 years ago and loved it. At least my mom is having some dementia, what is OP's problem?

I'm craving so much spicy ethnic food right now.

Your dad sounds awesome! He knows salt is essential for staying well in the heat, and he burns all the beer calories while mowing in this heat! I lost my beloved father last year, and this is the first summer I am going back home and he is not there!

It's going to be 100+ in Florence, Italy all week, OP. What do you think everyone is eating over there?

But ARE YOU FAT. That is the real question.

You should use smaller slices of lemon!

The help will be punished shortly for cutting such thick slices. Thank you!
