I'm really worried that I will get the same exact thing.

Op here. I sent away to Albany for an official birth certificate. I got basically the exact same thing as I already have but it was written in a way that people accept it as a birth certificate. I think it doesn’t have the words “registration” on it.

The document on the top is an official document and it was the only official document available to me when I was growing up. It was issued by the New York State Department of vital records. It had my full name, it had the full name of my mother and the full name of my father. It had the date I was born and the location of the birth, and it was signed by the correct authority. It has the embossed seal of the office of vital records. It was not a hospital issued keepsake. It was the birth certificate issued by the state of NY.

But because it was the word registration on it I think it confused people from other states. This wasn’t the document issued by the hospital to prove a birth certificate has been requested. This was the actual certificate that the office of vital statistics sent to you as your birth certificate. I used it for my passport!

You apparently work at DMV as well. That document appears to be a signed government document complete with seal. Not clear how to make it more authentic. It provides the exact same information that a "birth certificate" does. You can't get your original birth certificate. Only copies that certify that there is an original on file somewhere.

No, just volunteer for my children's soccer league in MD, and we have to abide by the rules of MSYSA. They say Birth Certificates, not Certificate of Birth. Not my rule...

That's extraordinarily pedantic. MYSYSA must be run by someone on the spectrum.

I just applied for a passport Friday and i had this exact thing. I was born in Elmira, NY and this was the birth certificate i have used for everything official my whole life. The postal employee said it is not a valid document for a passport and would not take it. I just requested a new birth certificate from ny. I don’t understand how i have been able to use this for a real ID, marriage license and trips to Canada as a child.

You need a real birth certificate. The Registration of Birth was the keepsake of the day. They still offer them in MD, and they are worthless.

The old document WAS an actual birth certificate. It unfortunately had the term “registration of birth” on it so many places aren’t accepting it.

This is so upsetting!!!!! I am having the same problem as all of ya'll in Madison WI. I am gonna loose my shit because I have to jump through hoops to get a "real ID Drivers license and a passport. I have been searching the internet for the last hour trying to get some answers and this site has been the only thing I can find. This is a serious problem that NYS residents have to deal with. Why doesnt the State make an announcement of some sort to all DMV managers and employees. Why don't they even have ANY info about it on their govt. Website or do they? I am livid over this BS that I completely do not have the time or extra cash flow for. I am going to the DMV tomorrow for the second time. Crossing my fingers and prayings that the administrator I get is not a complete asshole ego maniac. Cheers!

And then people wonder why having a valid ID to vote is a bad idea.

I'm sorry PP! It isn't a big deal (or political problem) for New York State residents, because THEY will accept the certificate just fine within their state. It's just expats like us who have fled the state for other states that are having a problem and you know, screw us, we left!

Everyone I know has had to contact NYS and get a new certificate wit the EXACT same information on, but missing the damning "registration" wording on it.

This document IS a birth certificate. It is not a keepsake issued from a hospital. It is an official certificate of birth because it has the following:

- issued from the Department of Health of New York State (the correct agency)
- full name
- full date of birth
- location of birth
- parents' full names
- signed by the relevant official
- With an embossed/raised seal from the relevant office.

The problem with it is they use the word "registration of birth" on it. That confuses officials. But it is the official birth certificate for New York State at the time.

California DMV won’t accept my birth certificate from NY because it looks like this this one “Certificate of Birth Registration.” It says on the front and back that it’s legal proof of age, parentage, place of birth and citizenship, AND that it’s suitable documentation for obtaining a passport. But not good enough to get a California driver’s license grrrrr. My passport just expired during Covid, so now what I have to do is get a expedited passport renewal by mail that takes 6 weeks, and then use that as proof of ID instead of a birth cert to get a California Real ID license. Unbelievable.

Real ID requirements have been postponed again (due to Covid, throws the October deadline out). In the meantime you can just renew a regular license without the real ID designation. Get a passport card if you really need to.

Yes, that will work. Make sure it is a certified copy with the embossed seal.
