immmigrant haters: do you really want to be like Japan?

No one is opposed to immigration.

But more than half the country is flatly opposed to ILLEGAL immigration.

Stop trying to combine the two into a blanket argument. They are as different as apples and hammers.

Reading threads like this help me understand why we have in excess of 11 million illegal aliens living freely in our country (probably closer to 20 million).

Our liberal friends here fully support illegal immigration. They seem to think it is a positive for our country. Doesn't seem to matter that they use many services for which they never pay and that we have no idea WHO is in our country. Those little inconveniences don't seem to matter. It makes no difference that we read stories about our fellow citizens killed by those in our country illegally. It doesn't matter that the children of illegal aliens use more services at our local schools than others. And, it is just too bad that low-skilled workers suffer in the long run from the presence of illegal aliens.

This is why I will vote for Trump again. He may not be able to do everything he wants to stop the flow of illegals into this country, but at least he is realistic about the issue. And, he is trying. I cannot say the same for the Democratic candidates. Not one of them.

Pay attention. The question is whether our economy currently depends on immigrants, legal and illegal (yes) and therefore whether we should be working ASAP to create a legal route for low-skilled workers (yes). So yes, it is a "blanket argument," if there is any hope of having a cogent policy argument.

I mean, I've cited those well known commies the Cato institute a zillion times to show that illegal immigrants don't hurt the economy, so I'm not sure why you are so focused on "liberals"? I've attempted to show that the policy should be to legalize immigration, because our economy needs immigrants.

Anyway, I will mark you down for "Yes, I would like a demographic collapse like Japan, and to be cared for by a robot in my old age."

THIS. The fact that OP chose not to differentiate between ILLEGAL and LEGAL immigration in the thread title is so telling.

You can mark me down for, "Yes, I would like to halt illegal immigration and make sure those entering are here legally."
I don't want to be cared for in my old age by someone here illegally.

I realize it's hard for you to process information so I will set it out again.

1) our current economy depends on low-skill immigration, or else we will crater like Japan, which only has old people due to their refusal to accept low-skill immigrants
2) low-skill immigration (legal and illegal) does not appear to depress wages
3) currently much of our low-skill immigration is illegal
4) therefore, the best policy position is to legalize immigration

This is where I am also.

Voted for Obama and Hillary but am now D.O.N.E. with the Democrats because of this very issue.

“the Cato institute a zillion times to show that illegal immigrants don't hurt the economy, so I'm not sure why you are so focused on "liberals"? ”

? not PP but come on. The economy “needs low skill low wage” workers so badly? Then why are we spending so much time trying to educate our kids well - the economy “needs” them!!
Employers will always look for low wage and low benefit work. And in SOME cases like crop picking I think it is accurate that it is impossible at virtually any price to get Americans to do those jobs. But plenty of other jobs now highly filled by illegals used to be filled by Americans willing to work for a certain level of wage and hours/benefits combo.

Sure the overall economy benefits from them - that does not mean workers do.

the research shows wages are not depressed by legal/illegal immigrants.

and yes, we need low-skill workers. don't you go to the grocery store, hospital, gas station, etc?

if you care that much about workers, the answer is to legalize immigration and strengthen unions.

... but yeah, your last line distinguishing the economy from workers makes you sound sort of like a Bernie man!

Bingo. I agree. Reading these incredibly naive posts from liberals insisting that *illegal* immigration is somehow a good thing just makes it all the more apparent how out of touch they are with the average American voter. And implementing E-Verify is a great first step that I agree with, but it’s madness to suggest that will stop illegal immigrants from trying to get in the country. Most of them work on a cash basis, no paperwork required. E-Verify is not the panacea they make it out to be (though it’s a start).

DP. You sound idiotic. The difference between the US and Japan is that the US has FULLY supported legal immigration - for decades. We have enormous LEGAL immigrant communities in this country. There is no need to open the floodgates to illegal immigrants. Japan is in an entirely different situation. They have ALWAYS been against any immigration to their country, period. Surely you can see the difference? If not, I worry for you.
