I agree with this. No sense in putting yourself in a possibly confrontational situation. There is a snowflake on here advocating against calling the police or animal control but their job is enforcing the law. So let them enforce it. |
You say snowflake, I say normal human being with social skills who talks to others rather than calls the cops or other authorities at the first sign of conflict. |
| Dog lady here, absolutely call cops every time. |
Are you incapable of reading? Everyone else who said they’ve asked dog owners to leash their dogs has been unsuccessful. I have personally asked a dog owner to pick up his dog poop and he flipped me off and kept walking. These people already know they are doing wrong. There are signs posted. I seriously doubt that OP’s request would be welcome or bring about change. |
| Call animal control. One of those off leash dogs chased my son on school property, while the owner tried unsuccessfully to chase after him. These dog owners know the rules and choose to flout them. I would not hesitate to call next time. |

I'm a dog owner, would never think of unleashing my dog near a playground, and have directly asked people who do to leash their dogs. They do. I'm polite but very firm: "hey, can you leash your dog? S/he's chasing the kids."
Now, if they didn't, I wouldn't hesitate to call animal control, but I give them a chance first. |

1. Talk to the dog-owner. 2. Call animal control. |
I read just fine. I also communicate without insulting people. If you want to call the cops or animal control first, that’s on you. I don’t think it makes me snowflake that I go up and talk to the person first. I’ve had different results than you, obviously. |
+1. |
| Call 911. Animal control won’t respond quickly enough. Dogs and children are a dangerous combination. |
+1 I rarely have my dog off leash but lots of people in my neighborhood park do and out of the 8-10 dog owners I see daily there is one jerk who would probably not leash his dog if asked but everyone else would. Two of my park “buddies” each have German Shepard’s that are incredibly well trained but look intimidating. I asked them in a not nice way to leash their dogs when we first met because my dog was overwhelmed by them & nervous. They did , no problem. I really see zero downside to asking - but I would say you or your kid is nervous of dogs v saying it’s illegal not. OF COURSE I would leash if my dog is scaring people (& she’s a “scary” breed to some” but telling me the law just comes across obnoxiously |
| By the time animal control (or police) show up, the person will be long gone. That has been my experience when calling the cops on people for various illegal activities such as setting fires, dealing drugs, etc. at the park. |
| I’m not a dog owner, although I do like dogs. It’s really bad where I live in the Bay Area-I have never called before. Why would a dog owner put themselves in such a vulnerable position? |
| Call 911 every time |
| hmm seems like there are a few guilty dog owners in this thread.... |
