Thinking of sending my white child to Banneker

Very interesting implied belief that your white child won't be attracted/attractive to black members of the opposite sex. I'm trying hard not to troll...In seriousness, I would (a) reconsider that belief, and then (b) consider how you would react if your child goes to Banneker and is attracted/attractive to black teenagers, and (c) consider how you would react if your child DOESN'T go to Banneker and is attracted to black teenagers.

I'm going to read differently into OP's post. Perhaps they meant that Banneker is a "nerdy" heads-down kind of school and therefore coolness and posturing may be less prominent? I really, really hope that's what they meant and not what you suggest.

Even in that case I think it's a stretch; this is high school.

This business of attraction to opposite sex fills up a lot of time in any high school, each year cohorts are different, depends on the group if it gets out of hand.

+1 It's the best high school in DC. Basic proficiency scores are much higher than for Wilson.

How do they report 100% graduation rate when so many boys drop out?

Kids don’t drop out of school, they love to another school. Also, I’m not sure you know how to calculate graduation rate.

On the other hand, for math, they offer AP Calc AB, and the lowest math IB level allowed. There are few offerings for kids interested in languages.

Interesting. I always thought it was more of a STEM school... no?

Not compared to Wilson, which offers AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, AP Comp Sci etc.

I considered it for my biracial child. I asked my kid and she said she thought it would be weird to go to a school with only Black kids and no white kids.

On the academics, yes, the students and the school are doing great on the surface and when compared to other DC schools but looking closer I realized that the kids are advanced compared to Other DC public school kids who are often doing below avwrage. So no not really advanced just average or a bit above. Then there were a lot of hallmarks ofnlow performing schools such as Saturday school, lots of summer bridge and study programs and so on. So yes, the school has students doing better than the average DC public high school student but in no way was it equivalent to the academic level at a mid range suburban school.

Simple, they kick them out before senior year, something like 50% of all boys.

Then they don't pollute Banneker extraordinary graduation rate.

What exactly are you looking at closely to see that they’re just doing better than average DC schools?

I would worry about bullying. Your child will be the only white kid. Will they be comfortable? Will YOU be comfortable with your kid dating black teens.

Banneker is a good achool and the best in DC but Most DC schools are so below average that really doesn’t mean much.

DP. My white kid is currently being bullied by other white kids, so not sure what your point is. And I'm not racist, so of course I'm comfortably with him dating anyone of any race. But thanks for asking!

Wow I didn't this was still a concern in the DC in 2019!

Why would you worry about bullying? Any evidence to support that?

My kid attends a majority minority school with few white kids--have never heard of any race-based bullying. Not sure why it would be any different at a high school like Banneker, filled with smart, studious kids.

Then you must be white. How can anyone think we are past racial issues?

People need to look at the actual demographics. https://dcschoolreportcard.org/schools/1-0402

Banneker enrollment in 2017-18

Black/AA - 74%
Asian - 3%
Hispanic - 20%
2 or more races - 2%
White - 1%

So yes, it is a majority Black/AA school. But there is some diversity and it is growing.
