??? Half the class of 2019 has not failed. Aside from your snide comment, this news is wonderful for these graduates.

what this man did is beautiful-- it's not a snide comment but a fact 45% of class of 2019 morehouse students have or will fail out.

morehouse 6 year graduation rate is only 55%

the world needs less miserable, hating foqqers like you. No matter the good someone does, people like you always find a way to diminish. As the saying goes, "Hater going to hate."

I wish the college was affordable, so that students didn’t need to rely on the kindness of strangers.

This. It was awesome what he did, and it'll make a great impact for those young men. But it's kind of ironic the photo of the donor (Mr Smith) next to the university's president. Guess who's responsible for the high tuition all those students got loans for in the first place?

Do you even know what the tuition is at Morehouse? I'd take that price over what I'm paying now. HBCU's try really hard to keep the costs low. And I'd argue they are not charging enough.

Morehouse: $26,742
Howard: $24.908
UVA (just picked at random: $16,412 (in-state), $45,756 (out of state)

There are a lot of stories that get buried. So, the estimate is that Robert Smith's donation will amount to ballpark about $40M.

https://nonprofitquarterly.org/2018/11/20/bloombergs-mega-gift-to-johns-hopkins-follows-tuition-free-trend/
This article lists two big donations. NYU has made it's medical school tuition-free. It required $600M to do this ($55K per student for 443 current students plus all future students). $100M came from Kenneth and Elaine Langone, the financier of The Home Depot.

It also describes Michael Bloomberg's extremely generous donation of $1.8B (yes billion) to the Johns Hopkins University to allow the scholarship fund to make scholarships need-blind, so that student do not need to leave the university with loan-debt.

Jeff and Mackenzie Bezos donated $33M to TheDream.US for 1000 scholarships for Dreamers to go to college.

https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/education/bs-md-umd-donation-20171002-story.html
A James Clark created a scholarship fund in 1994 with $15M. Over the next 2 decades he donated 10's of millions more to the scholarship fund. In 2017, his foundation donated almost $220M to UMD some of which is slated to add to the scholarship fund he started.

https://www.fastweb.com/college-scholarships/articles/mystery-donor-gives-76-million-to-colleges-for-scholarships
This one is interesting. An anonymous donor, donated $76M to 15 different colleges with the stipulations that a) the donations go to scholarship funds, and b) that the colleges do not attempt to find out who the mystery donor is.

Just the first few that came up from Google.

Yes, they do @$$hole. Each graduate is pledging $100 (100 * 400 grads = 40,000) to pay for the text books of the incoming class.

Affordable colleges don’t exist in America.

Yes, they probably do.

I posted this in the other thread about this donation:

Morehouse College has been the recipient of deserved charitable support before. Oprah Winfrey most notably created a scholarship fun in 1989 and over the years has donated $13M to the fund. She has helped hundreds of students attend Morehouse, many of whom would not have been able to attend college without the scholarships.

One of the last episodes of her show in 2011, there was a special tribute to her from those men. As of that show 415 men at Morehouse College had received scholarships. And those men collectively donated over $300K to the scholarship fund to "pay it forward".

Is he paying back those that didn't get a new house, but saved up money for college instead?

This is just another person helping out people that chose not to help themselves. Go pay off the community college kids debt while they work and go to school.

Agree! Nice gesture, but once again the families and kids that didn’t prepare financially, but still chose a 4yr college with debt are the winners.

This is the difficult position college admissions staff are placed in (in general, not just Morehouse). Do you lower standards, especially for under-represented groups, in the name of diversity? It will make your incoming freshmen stats look good, but it can put your graduation and retention rates at risk.

Why?

I don’t even believe in God nor care whether people choose to believe it is a man or woman
