??? Half the class of 2019 has not failed. Aside from your snide comment, this news is wonderful for these graduates.

what this man did is beautiful-- it's not a snide comment but a fact 45% of class of 2019 morehouse students have or will fail out.

morehouse 6 year graduation rate is only 55%

you could argue he bailed out the wrong half of the class. the most struggling are the dropouts with loans, are they not?

Is the UMD business school named after the same Robert Smith?

It appears no, different Robert Smith. Cornell did name their Chemical Engineering school after him though.

Also not the same Robert Smith as the front man for the Cure.

All joking aside it was a wonderful and generous thing to do.

Is he paying off all the credit card debt of the parents that didn't take out loans, but are going into debt helping their kids?

Is he paying back those that didn't get a new house, but saved up money for college instead?

This is just another person helping out people that chose not to help themselves. Go pay off the community college kids debt while they work and go to school.

I wish the college was affordable, so that students didn’t need to rely on the kindness of strangers.

This. It was awesome what he did, and it'll make a great impact for those young men. But it's kind of ironic the photo of the donor (Mr Smith) next to the university's president. Guess who's responsible for the high tuition all those students got loans for in the first place?

Do you even know what the tuition is at Morehouse? I'd take that price over what I'm paying now. HBCU's try really hard to keep the costs low. And I'd argue they are not charging enough.

NP. I saw the same figures just in a random Google search.

I am also wondering how this "pay off" will work? I assume this includes Stafford loans, but what about Parent Plus loans (parents name not student), private loans or a parent who opted for a second mortgage? Just curious.

Yeah. Very kind gesture but just giving everyone a $2000 along with their diploma would have been more fair
