"Look like us?" Uhm, you know there are millions of people of African descent in France? How many Francophone countries are there are in Africa? What about Hatians? Do you know how many French-speaking people of African descent are in the DC area? The world needs less racist nationalism these days. |
+100 my child wanted to start and affinity group but they weren’t allowed bc there weren’t enough kids! Food for thought. |
| I think this was started by St.Bart's. They just sent home a survey and gave the middle schoolers a marketing survey asking the exact same thing. |
| I love the thoughtful approach to play based instruction in the nursery program at St. Patrick's. The teachers are able to really clearly explain to parents what each form of play is doing for their development and seems to treat each child as an individual. They are meeting every kid where they are and it shows. |
| We love the Lower School at STA. It is a remarkably warm, kind environment where teachers and faculty work together to support each boy. The students work hard - but love it. |
I'm sorry, but do parents really have to have this explained to them? |
Unfortunately, there are lots of play-based learning skeptics around here. So...yes. |
Yes, it is helpful for teachers to walk parents through the pedagogy behind their work. It can help parents refine what they are doing with their children at home, connect more deeply to why play based it so important and also allows the teachers an opportunity to continue to remind high strung parents why it is ok that their 3 year olds aren't sitting in desks and doing handwriting. If you were a professional, wouldn't you want the opportunity to connect with and explain your work to key stakeholders? |
Complaining that the school isn't diverse when we have students from more than 20 countries - that's ridiculous. Thankfully, we don't have a single one of those "millions" of people in administration at Lycee Rochambeau and very few on staff. For those that don't like it and need that for their children, find another school. |
+1. I wonder whether the "look like us" PP is really a parent, or someone trying to make the school look bad. I have a child at the school and luckily haven't met any parents who've expressed similar sentiments. I will say I would love for the school to hire more teachers of color, though. |
Holy crap. |

Some things I love about Burke are:
Students generally are happy and mutually supporting (even in middle school!); Most teachers are warm, inspiring, and patient; The homework load is moderate, so students develop skills but still have free time; The school offers harder classes for more capable kids but easier classes for kids who struggle, and a kid can take some of each; Sports teams and extracurricular activities (bands, plays, etc.) are generally open to everyone, with no cuts; Burke students are very diverse not just racially but also socioeconomically and in academic ability; Counselling (college, personal, academic) is strong and focused on the individual student; The school isn't perfect, but I'm very pleased with it. I'm one of many Burke parents whose kids could have chosen "Big 3" but preferred Burke. |
| I like Madiera for the horses. |
I really dislike these finger-pointing posts. This forum is to share information and work together as a community. Are you really a parent? This passive-aggressive "I would love for the school to hire more teachers of color" but I'm still sending my children to the school anyway is a cop out. If your kids are at the school, clearly it doesn't matter to you. "Look like us "" PP - shame on you! You and Rochambeau both seem to believe that Francophone is a race instead of a cultural community. The majority of native French speakers in the world aren't white. We should all be doing the same thing - go tour the school, talk to at least 3 current and former families before you join. Always look beyond the admissions presentation - it’s just a sales pitch. |
Same for gds. thought my kid did say the other day “no talking about trump.” |
