+1 Look at JMU and VT. They are great schools and we know kids who are very, very happy there! |
My VA student w/3.4 W gpa (public) & 1280 SAT will be going to JMU in the fall. Denied from VT (not engineering). Accepted at ODU, RU, WVU, GMU. Did not apply to any other schools, but would likely have been accepted to CNU, VCU, Longwood if applied. Would not have been accepted at UVA/WM. |
My public school kid has a weighted 3.5 GPA and 1220 SAT. Accepted at JMU. Not going b/c got better money at another state school. |
+1. Take the challenging, college-prep classes, and do some test prep to bring up the standardized test scores. Should have your pick of VA in-state schools apart from UVA and W&M, with a 50-50 mix of A’s and B’s. VT will be a reach but could be possible depending on test scores and intended major. Mostly B’s will put VT out of reach and JMU a reach but you should be ok on everything else. |
Or 50 and below to end... |
| DD’s best friend had 29 ACT, 3.1 uw at MCPS, even two D’s, 4 C’s and then mix As/Bs and got into VT, Miami Ohio, Delaware, Indiana and ECU. Denied UMD, JMU, and South Carolina. Attending VT and is beyond thrilled. Counselor said VT was waste of time she would never get in. You never know, maybe they do read essays..... |
| Op here: thanks for your replies. My son is a freshman and has mainly Bs and gasp, a C. He is bright, but just not that into it. I don’t want to argue every night, but I am pushing him too. He is an athlete. I don’t want to get into the moco stressful feelings and comparing, but it’s tough! He isn’t going to a top school, but it seems like there are plenty of schools out there (many I haven’t heard of, which I also need to embrace) Fortunately, we have the means for public and private colleges. BTW: I didnt become intellectually curious til junior year, but it was prob easier to get into schools then and I went to a prep school in NYC. I am going to have to adjust my mindset some. I will get that college book. It’s tricky— bright kid who is social and just not that motivated, but again, i don’t want to argue all the time. He has a math tutor as well and we always check portal etc. I dont want to stress out over this too and in the process make us all feel bad. thx so much! |
| Having had four kids go through the process I'd strongly advise that you not even think about college or say anything to your kid about it for another year. I know that's hard to do, but trust me at this stage nothing you can do or say matters. Lots of kids start out with Bs and get serious later, and yes colleges are more competitive than ever but they still look favorably at the upward trend. Your kid is going to be just fine, and will be grateful later for you not putting on the pressure. |
Yeah step away from the Tiger moms destroying their kids who stay up popping ADD meds to study all night. B’s are fine. |
| Op here: thx so much... |
| Apply to a college with a lot of women and he will be a minority applicant |
Mostly true, but the so-called "top" schools have too many "all A's" or "all A's with one or two B+'s" that they can be selective without going to someone who is all B's for their first year or two. Bt yes, your mostly B student will land at an excellent school and be fine in life. Not everyone needs to go to one of 15 schools to be successful. |
OP. I can totally relate. My son is very similar. Athlete, highly intelligent. Mine is also young-ish for his grade. Highly recommended this series in Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-unmotivated-teen |
| The school where mommy and daddy donated a library, of course. |
Unless the kid is willing to go to community college and transfer. |
