| I am a 40yo White chick & I shop lift. Just started. Not sure why. I’m just tired of always following the rules. |
| My DD shoplifted sunglasses from Old Navy when she was a toddler. I was shopping, she grabbed a pair and put them on, settled back and fell asleep. I forgot all about them and bought my other stuff and walked out. |

I had to run after my kid at least once when I realized I had milk in my cart that I wasn’t paid for.
I couldn’t really go back since I had to make sure my child didn’t run into traffic. Forgive me, universe. I made a judgement call. Then there is this machine at work that won’t ring up certain items I am trying to buy. After trying 3 bottles of ginger ale, I said screw it. There is a camera - they watched me make a sincere effort. Let them come for the few bucks I literally couldn’t pay to them because their machine is dumb. |

OP here, very grateful for all the stories and insight.
I honestly hadn't even considered the polygraph issue...but thankfully, I changed industries when I left the US and I don't need a clearance anymore. Yes, I'm a nonconfrontational coward; a goody-goody with a huge conscience and I wish I were different. Thankfully this is already just a funny road trip story and I don't expect it to keep me up at night. Especially after I find a homeless person to donate the Capri-Sun to.

Positraction, or no positraction? |
Unlikely...but maybe there were two “yutes” driving an identical vehicle |

In the late 80s I had one of those winter jackets that the outside was that colorful knit sweater-like material. I was hanging out at the mall and of course browsing at Claries. When I got in the the car, my mom noticed two pair of earrings that had hooked themelves onto my coat. We went back in to return them and was so embarrassed.
And a couple of years ago I bought a plastic toddler pool from Target. $10, hard plastic. When I got home I realized I had 2, since they are on the shelf stacked together. I shoved it back into my tiny car and drove it back. They had a hard time understanding that I was bringing it back and not returning it to seek out a refund. |
| I walked out of a Pret without paying for my coffee. I made it a few yards, realized my mistake and went back in to pay and apologize for shoplifting. They smiled, said not to worry that it was on the house. |
I love you guys. I have found my people. |

My dad did this when I was a kid, at a gas station where you pumped first and then paid. We were coming home from vacation and my dad drove away without paying. He figured out the address when we got home and mailed the money and a letter to the station. I didn't know any of this happened, but I still remember the letter the gas station owner wrote back thanking my dad for being such an honest person. |
| Happened to me. I went back and paid later. |
