My dad did this when I was a kid, at a gas station where you pumped first and then paid. We were coming home from vacation and my dad drove away without paying. He figured out the address when we got home and mailed the money and a letter to the station. I didn't know any of this happened, but I still remember the letter the gas station owner wrote back thanking my dad for being such an honest person.
