Snobby kids maybe. Mediocre grades no.

Everyone I know who went to bucknell works on wall st or in finance now.

PP here. Same here - definitely a wall street feeder. Not the atmosphere I personally wanted for my kids and there's likely flexibility for full pay private school kids in terms of academic performance and admittance but overall it's a well regarded school and most of the kids that are accepted have put up decent grades.

In 2011-2014 39% of Bucknell grads finished with a STEM degree.

I know four Bucknell grads -- three are engineers and one is a HS Spanish teacher. The broad brushes people apply here are hilarious.

For a science major you want Colgate, Lehigh, or Bucknell

For business you may want Lehigh for its proximity to NYC but Colgate and Bucknell have equally strong programs

For engineering Lehigh is above the rest, but Bucknell is fine too.

I know nothing about W&L other than its lily white frat nonsense reputation.

Jobs coming out of the humanities are dying.

But jobs for kids with humanities degrees are fine as long as at a solid school and kids acquire some career-relevant experience and learn how to pitch themselves. In some cases, being a history major or a literature major AND knowing a programming language and having a relevant internship can make a kid stand out more. Same with social science majors like psychology, sociology--there are jobs that use the underlying skills rather than direct line. Look at the actual employment data for the schools you are interested in by major and see how it looks.

Only smart people, which, I guess, excludes you and yours.

What you and most people have to realize is that due to the increased number of kids going to college these days, there has been a trickle down effect on the quality of students at schools of all tiers. Kids who 20-30 years ago would have gone to top ivies, now go to 2nd tier ivies. Those who would have gone to 2nd tier ivies now go to top SLACs or top state schools, top SLACs/state schools to middling SLACs/state schools and on down. I would be that the average kid at a Bucknell or Richmond is smarter now than 20-30 years ago. I believe that eventually their reputations will catch up to this fact.

I suspect those who have a choice still go where they want to go, despite PP's perceived hierarchy.

My smart public school middle-class kid had a wonderful experience at Bucknell and did not care that it was not near a big city. The education was amazing, the coursework tough, and the kids all seemed nice and well-rounded. Internships are emphasized and the size of the school was perfect. I will forever be grateful that my kid got in and was so happy and successful. We are both teachers as parents and are pretty well versed in education, so I feel like I know what I’m talking about. Bucknell might not fit everyone, but we were very happy. My kid had an IB diploma from FCPS and was well-prepared.
