Luke Perry’s Death-why is it hitting so hard?

Anonymous
He was a big crush for so many who are now in their thirties and forties, and many of these people haven’t yet experienced the death of a friend, or even their parents yet. It’s a big blow to lose a peer. Maybe they never met him, but they watched him on tv every week for years. It creates a familiarity, and it’s sad to lose someone, especially so young and so suddenly.

Sadly it's a pretty terrible show. First season was better than later seasons. It makes no sense and the characters are infuriating. My husband and I still watch it, but we spend most of the time saying, "Why are we watching this?"

Luke was one of the best characters on the show.

I'm one of those gen xers surprised to feel so devastated over his death.

I am devastated as well.

90210 was a huge show over here in France. He will be missed by so many people around the world.

I can appreciate that it was a pretty crappy show, but to a 9-year-old, it was glamour and sophistication incarnate.

This is so true. It also had an element of naughtiness to me. Like I knew I was too young to watch it and probably shouldn't be doing it, but I still did. And it was one of those shows that you'd be embarrassed to be caught watching if your parents walked in the room because they always walked in on some kissing or otherwise "bad" scene.

It was like getting first-hand access to the cool kids.

My Riverdale fan niece is devastated.

It's a really good question. It's really interesting that Dylan McKay wormed his way into everyone's psyche. I think the reasons are complex and nuanced along with some of the obvious surface stuff.

I think for all the reasons everyone has said, but for me (I'm 50), he's the first major star of my generation to die of something old age related.

Not drugs, not stupidity, not a senseless car accident or something random. Barring any news coming out, this is the first whammy for Generation X.

Sure - it was hard when River Phoenix died - but he was doing drugs in the Whiskey a GoGo. Whitney Houston, drugs. Heck, Michael Jackson, drugs.

I'm so sad because he was so young and had young kids. And now I'm in my 30s and have young kids and it is scary to think about leaving them suddenly.

I’m 45 and have never seen a single episode of the show and never had any desire to. I don’t get all the angst over celebrity deaths in general. The only one that ever hit me was Natasha Richardson because she was out playing with her kids doing something people do ever day. She was talking and fine and the she wasn’t.

I am saddened by his death as well. His kids are 18 and 22, respectively.

Not true. She was skiing with her family in Canada and hit her head in an accident. I don't think she immediately sought medical treatment. She died from the head injury.

You don't know what respectively means.

Colin Hanks shared a cute story about Luke.

Makes sense. But look at the videos of him from his last red carpet appearance. He looked like he could have been 60+. Twinning with Bryan Cranston who is 62.
