Many come legally from countries where there is serious corruption and crime. Some people think America does not have a serious corruption and crime. |
Not as bad as El Salvador. |
I'd say the countries of "serious corruption and crime" describe most countries outside of Western Europe, including the US. Other than the blatant acts of corruption by former Gov. Blagojevich, in the US the corruption is more subtle AKA lobbying organizations. Just a few $$ million will get you 10 minutes with an democratically elected leader to air your views and seek his/her support for your industry/company to effect votes and multibillion dollar contracts. Well, the people I think you are referring to are involved in physical labor jobs. They come as young/middle aged adults. They're living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to learn the language. I'd say close to all, will not seek public office. Their children on the other hand will go to US schools and become Americans in the process of socialization to the society at-large. Cyber crimes know no geographic boundaries. There are a lot of Russian IT geeks involved in extortion and cyber crimes and they're in Russia or Malaysia. Then there are those generous Africans who offer me millions of dollars if I could just provide my bank account info so they can wire me the funds. Don't fool yourself into thinking corruption and crime enter the country only thru (illegal) immigrants. Many don't even have to be here to wreak havoc. Most importantly, don't blame the immigrants for crime and corruption. |
funny. What is american. It used to be native american, but then the immigrants came and created their own version of amricanism at the expense of the ancient american ways. And now some worry about what? |
Really? Because I've seen another study that shows that illegal immigrants consume three to one from the economy what they actually put in. It's no coincidence that the areas hit hardest by the subprime mortgage crisis are also illegal immigrant sanctuaries. I blame the lenders for this problem but the illegals shouldn't have been in the country in the first place. Now, the rest of us will pay for these bad loans. As for the cheap labor costs, those savings are not passed along to the consumer. In most cases, the business owner reaps the benefits of a cheap, uninsured labor supply and the rest of us subsidize bilingual educations, additional law enforcement and health services with our tax dollars. Any business owner hiring illegals should face severe penalties. Any illegal with a criminal record or DUI should be booted out of the country immediately. For others, I am in favor of some kind of guest worker program that requires payment of taxes and a long, serious road to U.S. citizenship. |
Those studies only look at recent immigrants. If you look longitudinally (ie, track a family through a whole generation of living here) they net out positive. In other words, adding their first years here when they are poor, and the later on they generate income and pay a decent amount of taxes. |
we also subsidize education in math, science, history and social studies. Not just Spanish. |
And here in the DC area, bilingual programs are filled with non-immigrants and legal residents who want their children to learn a second language. Japanese immersion programs are not exactly built to support illegal immigrants. Heck, Key School's bilingual program in Arlington is full of well-off, legal families. |
I also blame the lenders. You should be careful who you do business with. Lets just let the banks go bankrupt |
That's my gut reaction also. But the consequences of letting Lehman fail were too scary to just go with the gut. |
Does someone really think that the whole mess is because of the illegal immigrants? Are there that many of them? And all of them with bad mortgages? ?? |
No, illegals are not the cause of the whole mess but they have added to the problem and none of them pay the income taxes. |
What the hell does that have to do with anything? U.S. citizens who pay taxes have a right to request different school programs. There's a difference between this and having to hire teachers to teach English as a second language for ILLEGAL immigrants. |
I'm saying that bilingual education is not something that we are subsidizing for illegals by and large. It's mostly for legal residents. You make it sound like the programs are there for the purpose of dealing with illegals, and that's not true. |
Try calling them "criminal interlopers". It will make you feel even better than capitalizing "illegal". ![]() |
