| Question: are there any more liberal priests in the area to provide pastoral guidance on sex issues such as contraception? I'm too worried to ask my local parish priests (Nativity). |
Well doesn’t that just make you so special? |

The PP with the nasty rants offends even this very traditional Catholic. Hoping it’s a troll.
As for Franciscans and others, when they are granted care of a parish by the local bishop they remain subject to his supervision despite their religious order status. This is true of their other ministries in his diocese as well. If he doesn’t want them in his diocese he can send them away. |
You can find a priest to tell you anything you want to hear. If you really want to explore something as a matter of conscience, you’d be best with a competent spiritual director. You might find one at a local monastery or at a Jesuit community. If all you’re doing is forum shopping to find somebody who will endorse whatever you’ve decided it shouldn’t take too long. At least one “liberal” parish in Arlington seems to have been mentioned in prior posts. |
| This post is 5 years old and just goes to show you how much can change. My feelings on St Agnes and St Charles have changed dramatically in the last 5 years and maybe they’ll change again if the priests turnover again. I really wish the parishioners had more say |
If I’m not mistaken this is a Tridentine renegade chapel not in communion with Rome. |
This. |

We’ve been members of St. Ann’s since 2011 and have been very happy there. The priests are wonderful and I think it’s a great parish for families. For example, they have a kids’ mass during which young kids are invited to go to the chapel for most of the mass so that volunteers can explain the readings at their level. Although our kids go to public school, they’ve been able to participate in Faith Formation (CCD) classes and CYO basketball. They also have events like coffee and donuts after mass and soup for dinner during lent that give parishioners a chance to get to know one another.
When we lived in DC (and before we had kids), we went to Holy Trinity which I also loved. But, getting three kids to G-town and finding parking is too much of a hassle. So, St. Ann’s is a good alternative. Depending on what part of Arlington you’re in, though, HT might be pretty close. |
Found DCUM’s anti-Catholic bigot. Didn’t know he was a dude. I don’t believe the story about them trying to “force” to become a priest, that doesn’t ring true and there was certainly something more to the story. |
The type of person who is frequenting church in Arlington esp a younger person isn't necessarily truly liberal and doesn't love the liberalism of Arlington/DC. They are likely living there for career/commuting reasons and have sought out church as a traditional "non liberal" activity. I'm a middle aged person in Arlington as almost none of my colleagues attend any type of religious service - except one who goes on Yom Kippur and one who is an Alabama conservative who goes every Sunday just like when she was growing up; but the regular liberal folks probably haven't seen the inside of a church since the last wedding they attended or their kid's baptism often done to make the grandparents happy. |
Yeah, I'm not looking to forum shop, but to explore conscience. What are the local monasteries and Jesuit communities? Anything in VA? |
This might be your neighborhood or your circle of friends. My liberal neighborhood in Takoma Park is not like this, although they attend liberal or UU churches |
There you are again, the person who thinks anyone mentioning the FACTS about the Catholic Church’s long legacy of covering up the sexual abuse of children is a bigot. Sounds like the PP took out the trash and did the world a service by telling the truth about a dangerous pervert in their midst and the people who hid him. Shame it was revenge motivated, because really any good person would want to expose that kind of thing so the wrongdoers can be appropriately punished. |
Sounds true to me. Good for PP to call out the Catholic priest sexual abusers. |
