At what net worth did you feel rich?

I can easily afford to spend $800 on a blazer at Nordstrums but I really love it when I buy a lightly used blazer at a consignment shop for $100. I still agonize about spending the extra to fly first class and if I'm traveling alone I will usually fly coach. I love traveling with my DH because he won't fly coach! So while I know we are rich it took years of hard work, aggressive saving and bargain shopping and it's still in my DNA. At the same time I don't worry about money which is a great feeling.

I love a bargain! The thrill is in the hunt, for me. I got a Moncler coat at a consignment store for $400 and I'm still glowing at the win! I also use coupons at big box stores.

I'm undecided on the airfare. Sometimes it's worth it, other times I feel ripped off. I do think a very nice hotel is generally worth the mark-up. And guided tours, VIP lines, etc are definitely worth it to me.

I grew up poor with a single mother, so I never had the right clothes, shoes, hair. No car, no vacations, worked PT in college, etc. I 'made it' in my mid-20s when I could pay all my bills and rent on my own. I felt a huge relief when I paid off my student loans after 5 years. And I felt rich when our HHI reached $200k. It was/is more than my parents ever made. Net worth is over $5 million now and we are enjoying ourselves with nice trips, event tickets, etc.

When our assets totalled $1M and our debt went to zero.

I felt rich when one of us could walk away from our job and never need to work again, or when we could both walk away from our jobs and be set for a few years if need be.

It had more to do with our expenses:assets ratio than it did with our net worth.

I have a big need for financial security/stability, as you can probably guess. Financial "independence" from a job is what makes me feel rich, although we both still work - and it's actually amazing how our incomes and job enjoyment went up once we felt like it was easy to take risks and had nothing to lose.

When I paid off car and last student loan. Depends where you start in life. Now we have net worth of several million. Getting rolling was very hard - keeping it rolling was easier.

WOW!!! I guess DCUM ers are in the highest 5% of the country. I was listening to a podcast last month and heard that 67% of Americans have less than $10.000 in their savings.

Rich? not close. Rich seems like private airplanes and servants.

I think part of never getting to rich is that it will cost me more than $1 million to put my 4 kids through 4 years of college. Absolutely ridiculous. College costs in America have to change.

well that's not worth it may as well just invest the money for them.

No one forced you to have four kids. Stop complaining about the problem you created. You can’t control college costs, but you can control having four kids. Sorry, it’s just such a pet peeve of mine, people with three or four kids complaining about education costs. They were high when you got pregnant and they will continue to rise, it’s why most people don’t have three or four kids.

PP here. I’m somewhat like you, except I’m the DH.
I wait to buy most things until they’re on sale and I never pay for 1st class on a plane. However, I do pay for “comfort seating” or premium economy, to me that’s worth it.
Curious though, what’s your approximate net worth?

It's really high. If I said the amount people would think I'm crazy to shop in a consignment store.

I don't know what rich is but I feel very secure. No debt, can buy whatever I want yet my wants are few. I can't wait until my husband retires.

When I was in my 20s and took off backpacking around the world and had to stop in South America to work. I didn't have much money, but felt free.

Now I have money and kids and feel burdened as hell.

I agree with this. Our net worth is lower - about $1 million. But I have felt rich for a very long time because I grew up so poor.
