Really? I'm not OP but I cannot understand why it would be OK not to bring it to OP's attention. It broke, shit happens, it was an accident but seriously not telling OP is bs. I'd be pissed about not being told, not about it breaking.

+1, especially if it's not a sentimental or important vase to you.

Maybe the cat knocked it, and she cleaned it up?

This sounds eminently plausible, especially since she has told OP before when she has broken something.

OP, your insurance should cover this. Is it even legal to dock someone's pay for damages like this?

You honestly think so? All the broken pieces from the bottom were inside the vase, and the vase was propped upright.

But either way, I'll just let it go. The money doesn't mean that much to me....but probably does to her.

Thanks for the responses.

Yes because maybe she found broken vase and thought you might want to piece together?

Dock her pay? Are you for real??

Christ.

I mean, maybe give her a spanking too while you're at it.

A huge ugly one at that.

My guess is the cat broke the vase before the cleaners started to clean and one of them just picked up the pieces to make sure that OP didn't cut herself and so that it wasn't a big mess. They left it there so OP could decide whether it was important enough to get it fixed/glued or just to the throw it away.

Picking up the pieces and putting them inside the vase and leaning it against the wall is NOT hiding the error. That is putting it out in the open. If they were trying to hide it, they would have cleaned the whole thing up and discarded the pieces in the trash and then tell OP that they hadn't noticed the vase and have no idea what happened to it.

I would most definitely not say anything and not ask them for anything. If this is a recurring problem, then you change housecleaners/services.

I bet the cats did it and she put the pieces in the vase thinking maybe you could fix it. Dock her pay and you might have a dead cat next time she leaves.
Op, you are an asshole.

I’d not take money from someone for breaking my clutter.

Of course not!!!!

Yes, I think it is perfectly plausible that she saw the broken vase and as a part of her duty to clean up she straightened it up best she could. Maybe she assumed you knew the cat broke it. I have a cat, they knock things over.

I want to see this vase

Op, you are an asshole.

New poster.
OP's real mistake was telling the cleaner a while ago that breakages were no big deal. Whether the cat broke the case or the cleaner broke it doesn't matter. What matters is that OP should just communicate with the cleane like they're both adults and simply say, "I found this vase broken. Like I said before, the damage isn't the issue but in the future if something gets broken during cleaning or if you just find something broken, just let me know so I don't find it later -- tell me that day, just so I know and can decide whether to repair or replace anything that's damaged. Thanks."

Simple and grown-up. For OP to just seethe and want to dock pay after initially telling the cleaner it was no problem to break stuff is just immature.

If OP has changed and now thinks some damages ARE a big deal she has to tell the cleaner that and set out a policy about docking pay going forward--but it would be crappy to dock pay retroactively like OP proposed in the post.

You know, I didn't even think of that.....but I suppose it's possible. I'm not going to even mention it to her.

Of course that’s possible. Are you a new cat owner or something?
