Would You Deduct pay from Cleaning Lady for Vase IF....

Anonymous
....she didn't tell you she broke it, and you discovered it days later on your own?

She's broken a few minor things, and has always told me, and I've never deducted or asked her to pay for it, but this time....she didn't tell me. (Also, for clarity, there are two: the owner and her helper.) It was a gift from a old boyfriend, so more "memory value" than actual value. What bothers me more is that she tried to hide it.

WWYD?

How do you know she broke it?

Are you sure it was her?

Is it a Ming vase?

What kind of expense are we talking here?

If the amount is negligible, then I would let her know that you know and tell her she has to tell you. Do you have anything in writing re:contract? Are you paying taxes on her? If not, them's the breaks, as they say.

she’s a cleaner, not a saint.

What was the value of the vase?

I know she broke it because it's only me and the cat, and I don't think the cat would have taken all the broken pieces and put them inside the vase, and then propped it up against the wall.

It is not an expensive vase. I'd guess $50 tops. I was thinking of docking her $25, mainly because I am annoyed she didn't tell me. As I said, she's broken a few other things - a picture frame, little things like that - and I've always told her not to worry about it.

And no....no contract. She comes infrequently, and not on a regular schedule.

let it go. not important.

No. $25 or $50 bucks is a lot for my cleaning person and I am a big believer in grace when I can afford it.

Could have been the cat.

+1, especially if it's not a sentimental or important vase to you.

Maybe the cat knocked it, and she cleaned it up?

Don't deduct her pay, just find a new person. why is she breaking so many things?

You honestly think so? All the broken pieces from the bottom were inside the vase, and the vase was propped upright.

But either way, I'll just let it go. The money doesn't mean that much to me....but probably does to her.

Thanks for the responses.

You sound like an asshole OP. Who cares if she told you or didn't tell you? The outcome remains the same. Deal with it and move on. If you're unhappy with her work, find someone else.

You know, I didn't even think of that.....but I suppose it's possible. I'm not going to even mention it to her.

Nice.
