Serena Williams’ ‘Wakanda-Inspired Catsuit’ Banned By French Open

Serena and Nike both said that it was designed before the Black Panther movie. As a tennis player, I think it is a pretty smart strategy to wear it, compression or not - it is distracting!

If you don't like the rules, don't play in the game.

Rules are rules.

Which is why it's unfair to other players, and why Serena and Nike just said they're moving on and will have a more respectful (and equally protective) outfit next time.

Let's drop the all-American faux outrage.

Love that she wore a tutu today—and still won her match.

Really? This article says it was inspired by the movie.

“Serena Williams returned to Grand Slam tennis on Tuesday after maternity leave, turning heads at the French Open in what she called a “Wakanda-inspired catsuit.”

“It made her feel “like a warrior princess kind of, [a] queen from Wakanda,” she said, referring to the setting of the hit movie “Black Panther.”

+1 It's not enough that Serena said it wasn't a big deal, you still need to get worked up? Idiots.

The one sleeve jobbie? I get that figure skaters have to put up with discomfort for a 5 minute routine, butvas an athlete, I 'd want both arms free. Those matches are long and hot. Why inflict this on yourself?

She is such an amazing woman. Go Serena!

A legend in her own time. Respect.

She is awesome and a total legend but the catsuit and the tutu were hideous.

She's been wearing a lot of long sleeved clothes in matches since having her daughter. I wonder if, like some players wear a sleeve on their dominant arm, it helps her some how.

I was surprised that she quickly released a statement saying she was fine with the French open ruling about it. It is ridiculous. There is little "traditional" dress other than that forced on women. Even Federer rarely wears a shirt with a collar. The mens clothing is widly patterned and colored. Rafa wore capris with muscle shirts in the day.

That same article says it was designed before the movie.
