The investigation revealed that on Tuesday, July 31 at approximately 12:30 p.m., a MCPS school bus transporting students receiving special education services was stopped in the area of Yates Road in Silver Spring. During the time that the school bus attendant left the bus to assist in the drop off of another student, the driver who remained on the bus, sexually assaulted the 12-year-old female victim. The investigation resulted in charges for inappropriate sexual contact.

The school bus camera captured video of the assault.

RE: Background checks - they don't screen for people who haven't yet committed a crime but will ...

Raping a student on camera does not get him fired.

What happened to the MCPS Employee Code of Conduct?

WTF?? He’s put on leave. I’m sure there are tons of legal protections for MCPS employees but what about protecting the kids? Crazy that they have video evidence and the man is not fired.

Wondering the same! That is crazy. What a terrible story.

I’m wondering if this was a situation where Parent of Student A is often late meeting the bus and the driver knew he would be alone with Student B for several minutes while the aide waited with Student A outside his/her home.

It's a special ed bus, so it could indeed take a few minutes to get a student off the bus and into their home, like if they are in a wheelchair or something like that.

Unions, of course.

Since he is off the bus and away from contact with kids, firing the man on the spot, at this point, will not protect the kids any more. MCPS has procedures for firing employees and should follow them.

The aide doesn’t have to get the student into their home. Handoff is usually on the sidewalk. It should take only 5 min if the receiving caregiver is there waiting. .

Meanwhile, he keeps getting a paycheck till MCPS follows "procedures".

There must be other victims. This guy was working for MCPS for a long time. How many of his busses did not have cameras or the cameras did not work? How often is the video footage monitored? Was it only looked at after the child reported something or being that it is a disabled child, the parents noticed something with their child.

That's what sex offenders are hoping you will say. MCPS lets these offenders keep their MCPS id badges. MCPS lets them stay employed in the school system so you never know where they will turn up. They also get to use their MCPS id status to get other part-time jobs working with children in camps, sports, after school activities. The pedophile union is thrilled to have administrators like you making this mistake over and over again.

You know people like you do not advance the cause of protecting children.MCPS put the man on leave. His freaking face is plastered all over the news.
How in the hell is having a MCPS badge going to get him another job? How do you know he was not required to turn it in?
You are just hollering and not making any sense or calling for procedures that actually, you know, protect kids once someone has been determined to be a sex offender.
How about jurisdictions sharing information, tougher sentences for sex offenders, etc.
smh

He’s in jail and not bonded out. That ID badge isn’t doing him a bit of good, even if he had it with him. Plus, jail is a sucky place to be a child molester.

If he is on leave with pay, then yes, he is. If he is on leave without pay, then no, he doesn't. Either way, he's nowhere near a kid. And that's what's important, right?

Public agencies can't just haul off and fire people. I think that's a good thing.

Footage is only reviewed after incidents are reported. The same is true of WMATA and RideOn busses. No one is monitoring real time or reviewing footage each night.

I’m glad MCPS moves relatively quickly as well as the police department. I wonder how long the bus driver worked for MCPS. I do agree jurisdictions should be willing to share that information with school districts. The problem with background checks is that one could go through a background check but at the time of an alleged incident the person may have a clean background ——- even with yearly background checks.
