Recent alum: worth every penny. |
Guessing you don’t know much about anything at all. The statement is clear. You’re just dumb. |
We toured Not impressed. Not worth the money The 82% greek participation figure is a turnoff, especially when you consider costs of membership. W & L is the only school I've ever researched that actually posts the costs of Greek participation on the "costs to attend" page. |
| Fantastic place. Went to the top of my daughter’s list after participation at their lacrosse camp and a private tour offered by a member of the administration. Incredibly nice people and gorgeous campus. |
| The only people that really care about either of these places are people who either attended or their kids attend/attended (in the scheme of things, that’s not a whole lotta people). That said, Claremont is the more generic and less offensive of the two. W&L with its Greek bend and Confederate flag waving town is the more likely to offend if it comes across the wrong employers desk (and yes, as of 2 years ago when we drove through Lexington, there were confederate flags (we saw them) flying in the town - it IS that kind of place for real. |
| Employers? No chance. Many confederate flags in and around C’ville. Are UVA grads struggling with the association? Same for many southern schools. Part of a weird problem but hardly unique to Lexington. Lexington is a very cute little town, ignorant yahoos aside, and immediately adjacent to the campus. |
As opposed to any other two small liberal arts colleges? Do tons more people “really care” about Bates or Gettysburg? And Claremont is “generic”? Really, really stupid post. |
| Fun fact.....dumbest kid in my big3 graduating class went to W&L. He was a legacy, but to this day when I hear about that school I think of a college for wealthy dummies. |
Things change. Take a look at their admission data. Overall, the relatively wealthy part is still true. |

I have a TJ kid, good grades, SAT, ECs, applying to SLACs. I would love them to apply to Pomona or CMC (or Mudd), but they want to say east of the Mississippi, and I am trying to respect that. We are knocking out schools with no merit aid (e.g., the NEASC schools), because they cost twice what WM does, and it isn’t worth it.
In addition to WM and VT School of Science, Davidson, Grinnell, Macalester, Kenyon, And Oberlin top their list. Wooster is an extreme safety, but everyone in our family is very impressed. We considered Denison, but it was not a great fit for our particular DC. At no point did we seriously consider W&L. I get the impression it is more preprofessional (vs science research and pre-PhD). But the good old boy Southern atmosphere and the super strong Greek system knocked it out of contention. (To a less extent, this is why they are not applying to UVA). I’m sure W & L is a good education for the right kid. My kid is not that kid. Interesting that TJ almost never has anyone apply or attend, despite in being in VA. OP: getting into CMK is going to be a heavy lift from this area— maybe harder than an Ivy, because there are so many qualified kids, and CMK tries hard to mKe a super diverse class of 400–every state, dozens of counties, etc. They are only going to make so many DMV offers. But if you kid can get in and wants to go to CA. they should do for it. Grad schools and academic employers know all about it. I’d pass on W & L. But I hate the good old southern frat boys and girls there to get their Mrs. culture. |
One of the dumbest in mine went to Penn. Starting to look like a good list. |
Eh....kushner went to harvard. Not a good list to be on. |
It's too expensive and competitive for an Mrs. degree, try again. |
| The “Mrs degree” is just so absurd and offensive. The ladies at W&L are intelligent, high-achieving kids and to insinuate that they are there to find a husband is just unfair. Perfect post for an anonymous chat board. Idiotic, I’ll-informed and misogynist. |
| Wouldn’t want my kid anywhere near a stem-grinder like TJ. Just what we need, hordes of tech robots who don’t read books without formulas. |
