This emergency declaration allocates $2 million to pay for the response and security provided by state services should it be needed (which it is not currently). As a hopelessly elitist northeasterner and an unabashed education snob I think of W&L as a middling, provincial little college. I question the culture there as well. The only reason gifted children would attend is that they must have some sort of bizarre affinity for southern culture and Greek life. Any reasonable child with an enlightened worldview and high stats would eschew W&L for a more well regarded LAC....take your pick of the NESCACs. Working in finance in NYC I can assure you that those degrees carry weight whereas very few have even heard of W&L and those that have will likely share my opinion.

I don't think you've ever worked in finance in NYC. At least not the real finance.

I don't think much of people who call themselves hopelessly elitist and an education snob and I'm from a well off northeast family with a long history of Ivy league and private school attendance. Washington & Lee is known. For a variety of reasons and not all of it is positive, as you've alluded. But it's known and it attracts kids from the northeast as well and many go into finance.

The northeast has its own cultural strains that are just as conservative and narrow minded as Washington & Lee is supposed to be. And a lot of it is found on Wall Street too. Let's not kid ourselves.

+1. I had not heard of it until we toured for DC. I went to top Slac and Ivy Law. DW went to top SLAC. We simply didn't get why some students want to go there. Maybe it's family tradition or the Greek system but It was a lost day of touring for us. DC was more interested in VMI next door!
