You knew them their? |
Definitely a past subscriber and contributer. NYT is going downhill fast. Yes, march (not match) permits were not issues and most of those ringleaders involved have signed agreements never to return to the city to protest. You would know that if you had read up about it. This is a non-issue in Charlottesville. The top ringleaders however HAVE received a march permit to march in D.C. |
Just...no. Of course it’s still an issue. Someone died in this mess. I’m not attacking Charlottesville or UVA. Both are fabulous. But this runs deep and it will take more time. They still have monuments for crying out loud. I have one at Richmond and I know that city is struggling with the right response. |
But you are - in a thread that is supposed to be about comparing Claremont McKenna to Washington & Lee! |
I didn’t bring it up and it wasn’t an attack. I merely offered a rebuttal to your lame point and a more reasonable view. If this is the process by which you analyze the NYT I now see the problem. Have a great day. |
No march permits issued in Charlottesville. All calm and happy in Charlottesville. March permits have been issued in D.C. Stick with the facts and never, ever believe fake news again - happy in Charlottesville |
Lord you’re stupid. |
Yes. Typing on my phone. Should be "there," happy now? Went to lots of frat parties at W&L. Good ole boys are not forbidden from making money. |
Couldn’t get in though. Too stupid. |
Looks like you may be the stupid one. The march IS headed for D.C. not Charlottesville. https://wjla.com/news/local/dc-white-supremacist-rally. Can we get this discussion off politcs and bak to comparing Wash & Lee and Claremont? |

State of emergency declared for Charlottesville. I guess genius was right!
|
State of Emergencies are called only to bring in extra services and federal support if needed. This emergency declaration allocates $2 million to pay for the response and security provided by state services should it be needed (which it is not currently). This order was done by the State's Governor (Northam - D) as a prophylactic measure because the last governor (Terry McAuliffe - D) so botched up the Charlottesville riot in 2017. Nothing is happening in Charlottesville. No march permits have been granted. Everything is quiet. State emergencies are often called even pre-snow storm to let the state avail itself of state resources should it need it. The calling of a state emergency means absolutely nothing except that the local police can call in support throughout the state should they need it. Sigh. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/blakemontgomery/virginia-state-of-emergency-unite-the-right |
| As a hopelessly elitist northeasterner and an unabashed education snob I think of W&L as a middling, provincial little college. I question the culture there as well. The only reason gifted children would attend is that they must have some sort of bizarre affinity for southern culture and Greek life. Any reasonable child with an enlightened worldview and high stats would eschew W&L for a more well regarded LAC....take your pick of the NESCACs. Working in finance in NYC I can assure you that those degrees carry weight whereas very few have even heard of W&L and those that have will likely share my opinion. |
I don't think you've ever worked in finance in NYC. At least not the real finance. I don't think much of people who call themselves hopelessly elitist and an education snob and I'm from a well off northeast family with a long history of Ivy league and private school attendance. Washington & Lee is known. For a variety of reasons and not all of it is positive, as you've alluded. But it's known and it attracts kids from the northeast as well and many go into finance. The northeast has its own cultural strains that are just as conservative and narrow minded as Washington & Lee is supposed to be. And a lot of it is found on Wall Street too. Let's not kid ourselves. |
+1. I had not heard of it until we toured for DC. I went to top Slac and Ivy Law. DW went to top SLAC. We simply didn't get why some students want to go there. Maybe it's family tradition or the Greek system but It was a lost day of touring for us. DC was more interested in VMI next door! |
