Key Middle School -Springfield - High Shool Plans?

Relative to what the school is up against in terms of poverty and ESL, the name is no BFD. Change the name to Central Springfield or Springfield Town Center High or Puppies and Unicorns High. Do you think the families in West Springfield will suddenly be OK with being rezoned to that school? Why does no one understand this?

And this goes back to the other question: Should they just close Lee? It is already the smallest school in the county. Or do the other schools want it open just to act as a sponge for the poor kids?

EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS THIS. Op also understands this. You get a nicer house for less money, but it comes at a cost.
Op - time to use your google and find the closest private schools to your home.
That or push for your kids to make the cut for TJ.

This is a troll response.

Send your kids to Lee. If you have faith in your parenting and your kids, they will do well. If not, I don't know what to tell you. FCPS provides solid resources for all of its schools.

We won't move but we would go private if TJ is not an option. Why is that a troll response?

Probably because no thought is put into it.

What is your specific issue with the school and have you experienced it first hand in any way?

Should FCPS just close Lee?

My biggest issue with Lee is that my child would be going to a school named after Robet E. Lee and the ugliness of WHY it is named after him.

The test scores are terrible and a family friend who went there recently decsribed it as an awful experience that he couldn't wait to get out of. Why do I need to have first hand experience to determine that it wouldn't be a good fit? Red flags everywhere. We have the resources to avoid it and will.

I have no allegiance to the name and don't really care if they rename it. In no way, however, should it be your biggest concern. The day to day impact of the name on students is nil. They are all Lancers. It does not impact student performance. I just don't hear students saying, "Darn, I would have done better in that class, but that damn Robert E. Lee!"

Test scores - I don't suppose you should be shocked that, in one of the poorest schools in the county with one of the highest ESL populations, that test scores won't be through the roof. Remember, however, that your student is an individual. I know a number of students, including my own children, who score quite well at Lee.

Based on your second paragraph, it doesn't seem as if the name is really your biggest concern. In other words, if they changed the name (your supposed biggest concern), it does not appear you would then be willing to send your kids to Lee. Let's face it, you say you have the means to avoid it and will, which is basically saying you can avoid the 'poors'. This just feeds the self-fulfilling cycle that Lee is trapped in as it gets poorer and poorer.

So, should they close Lee? Or do the surrounding schools want it to exist just so it can absorb the 'poors'?

I am curious, do you consider yourself more liberal or conservative. The vast majority of posters on this site seem to be liberal, but they don't live what they say.

The name "Robert E. Lee" means nothing to Black children? Okay. And the fact that it was named that in retaliation for Fairfax County being forced to desegregate? Okay.

And yes, the test scores are a major concern. My kid is in the AAP and needs to be challenged. How will that happen if the teachers are busy focusing on ESL and whatever else.

You are reaching with the "poors" nonsense so I wont even address it. I dont care what they do with Lee as it wont be my concern.

I am a liberal but probably more on the conservative side. No sure what that has to do with anything.

I said the name doesn't matter in the day to day lives or performance of the students - black, white, asian, hispanic, you name it. It is a non-factor. It just falls into the background for all Lancers. Go ahead and change it, it won't change the performance of the school and you still won't send your children there. You know what would change the school - not concentrating all of the poor folks there.

Test scores go directly with income and ESL, so your second and third points conflict. You are avoiding the 'poors'. No one said black people are above avoiding the "undesirables".

My point about liberals is they say they are all about the poor and downtrodden, until it might affect them personally, then they take off. Happens all over Fairfax County.

If you are so offended by the name as a black person, why did you buy a house in the Lee boundary?

Why do you think you can speak for all children of all races -particularly for black children and how they can be impacted by the name? That's odd. If you think black kids cheering for Robert E. Lee say at a football game isn't screwed up, then I don't know what to tell you.

And I said the name was the biggest reason, not the only. Yes, there are multiple reasons why I won't send my kids there. I'm not sure why you are hung up on this point.

We bought our house because we loved it and literally the only negative against it was Lee High School. And since we have the means to avoid Lee High School, it wasn't enough to stop us from buying.

I can't say no one is offended, but I can say that it does not affect the students day to day like you think it might. Minority students do well at Lee despite the name. They participate in the sports, band, drama, and cheer for the teams (the Lancers). And like I said, no one is running around saying, "Gee, my SAT scores would have been better but the name of the school was just killing me." Honestly, adults make way too much of this issue. Go ahead and change the name. It won't make a damn bit of difference if all the poor kids in Springfield are zoned for it.

I focused on the name because that is what you claimed your biggest issue was. But I know that is not why you won't send your kids there. It is just an excuse. You think your kids is too good for Lee. This leads to a cycle where more and more high-achieving students do not attend Lee, thus reinforcing the problem. So you are part of the problem.

So again, why do you think you can speak to the impact it has on all kids? Your insistence that you know how it impacts all kids, day to day is really silly. Are you a person of color? Black?

You dont know me at all. The name is actually a reason I wouldnt send my kid there. You seem to have an issue with insisting you know the minds of everyone.

My job as a parent is to find the best learning environment for my child, not boost the scores for the greater good. If that makes me part of the problem then so be it. I will not sacrifice my children's education for some feel good nonsense.

You are only their for your kid. That is fine, just stop voting for liberals that put the greater good nonsense on the backs of others.

Anyway regarding ESL if you want liberal policies, prepare to have an influx of people in need of ESL and the resources to support it. Thats just the way it goes.

No, I have black friends who may or may not be offended by the name (likely in the bigger picture are offended), but they see that the school has other issues that are more critical. A rose by any other name...

Lee is a lot more complex than Hitler, especially when you compare him to men of his time, including northern leaders.

Comparing Lee to Hitler shows that you are very ill informed about history and is insulting to both black people and jews.

The majority of your middle class students?

Yes. To be fair, I don't know anything about their financial situation beyond what they tell me (there's no flag in the system for "free lunch"), but I don't teach ESOL. My gen ed/honors students more often than not go to Lee. Out of my 110 students this year, I had 2 go to TJ, one to St. Paul for sports, and one to south county. The rest are going to Lee, as far as I know.

Most years 2-3 go to bishop, 2-3 to Edison/south county, and the other 100+ to Lee. Key has 350-400 kids per grade, so if you look at grade sizes at lee it should be relatively easy to identify the percent that goes over.

Lee is a lot more complex than Hitler, especially when you compare him to men of his time, including northern leaders.

Comparing Lee to Hitler shows that you are very ill informed about history and is insulting to both black people and jews.

No, I have black friends who may or may not be offended by the name (likely in the bigger picture are offended), but they see that the school has other issues that are more critical. A rose by any other name...

LOL. This tells me all I need to know, thanks.

Am I not supposed to have black friends? And should I just assume that the name of Lee High School is their raging issue when they aren't talking about it? Why should I think that is the particular issue they are wanting to address when they have talked to me about other issues? Is it that I used the descriptor 'black'? That was in direct response to a previous point about having one black friend.
