This event is only recorded in one of the Gospels, if I remember correctly. One theory is that this was added (remember, the accounts of the death of Christ were written many years after he was killed) to stop talk that the resurrection did not truly happen. People were already speculating that Christ was not dead when his body was placed in the cave.

My memory was that at least one of the gospels said that there was some pressure to get the bodies down before the Passover sabbath started, so they hurried death along by stabbing him in the gut. And hence Catholic tradition holding that Jesus died at about 3:30 on Friday (time enough to get him down before sunset).
